Cat Information Pages - cats and your health
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease you can catch mostly from cat excreta (faeces).
Cats bury their droppings in the garden or in cat trays or such. If you handle
cat excreta even by mistake in the garden (it may not even be your cat) and
the cat poo has toxoplasmosis in it and you catch the illness, you can become very sick.
The illness is hard to treat and in adult people, it can cause a long period of
debilitating illness which symptoms resemble glandular fever.
Symptoms may include swollen glands, tiredness, a general feeling of unwellness,
and fever like symptoms. In immunocompromised people, toxoplasmosis may even be
lethal and/or may cause scarring of the eyes and the condition may become
chronic in some people. The disease is detected by blood tests.
The human body produces
two types of antibodies to fight the parasite which your body tends to treat
similarly to a virus. One type of antibody says you have been exposed to the
toxoplasmosis and the other type says you are positive to a recent exposure.
Your gland/s may swell up (in the neck for example) and you may feel very ill.
Toxoplasmosis is especially bad for pregnant women.
Consider wearing gardening gloves when gardening and change cat trays regularly.
(2)Cat Trays
Cat Trays may be the source of toxoplasmosis or other diseases and should
be cleaned out regularly. Consider wearing gloves and a mask.
(3)HIV and immunocompromised people and cats
Cats may cause serious illness in HIV compromised
people.Beware of toxoplasmosis and other illnesses.
