Serge L I agree with the epicness of the story. The film happens a bit too much inside though. I guess that is where women are mostly found normally. There is a lack of action and a lot of talking about events that would normally make good scenes. The film is long still and found myself snoozing mid-way. Had to rewind. There are good scenes and beautiful scenes that are worth it. It comes out as a romantic film for girls to me. I think this would make a nice teleserie like there are so many in french and english. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/17 Full Review Audience Member had to see the movie after reading the book. enjoyed seeing the book 'brought to life', basically to see the "kimono porn", and the hybrid Eastern/Western architecture. Wow are the younger sisters spoiled and indulged, in the book its not so clear, but painfully so in the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member an epic period pic/chick flic-Japanese style Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review s r A well made film showing the cultural intricacies of the Japanese middle to upper classes. Ultimately, it was a sad film when it came down to seeing the struggles to meet cultural expectations. It was almost a Jane Austen novel Japanese style. The power struggle between sisters was very intense. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Tremendous adaptation that captures so much of what makes Japan, and Osaka, tick. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Ichikawa Kon's one of the bests. How beautiful the first ohanami scene!! Kishi keiko and Sakuma Yoshio...great acting. Yoshinaga Sayuri speaks very few lines. Ichikawa knew Yoshinaga was a bad actor if she speaks too much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Pauline Kael New Yorker Ichikawa is a deadpan sophisticate, with a film technique so masterly that he pulls you into the worlds he creates. There doesn’t seem to be a narrative in The Makioka Sisters, yet you don't feel as if anything is missing.
