TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of suicide and mental health below.

The Sister Wives cast was incredibly affected by Garrison Brown's untimely death in March, and Kody Brown might be experiencing more depression than he lets on. Garrison died by suicide in his Arizona home in March, and the Brown family has been reeling since. As stars of one of the best reality TV shows, it's no wonder the interest in how they're faring in the wake of Garrison's death has only grown. However, Kody isn't known for showing much genuine emotion aside from anger or frustration on the show. In the weeks after his son's death, this has changed.

Kody's former wives: Meri Brown, Christine Brown, and Janelle Brown, left him in quick succession in 2023. His one remaining wife, Robyn Brown, expressed a desire to continue a polygamous lifestyle, but Kody was settled into his monogamous relationship with Robyn. The fallout from his marriage in the public spotlight often got ugly, and it may have affected the children more than was initially anticipated. As the family continues to reel from the loss of one of their own, Kody's struggle to come to terms with the loss of his son is affecting him personally and in his marriage.

Kody is not okay at all. He's retreated entirely.

Unexpectedly losing a child is incredibly heartbreaking. The Sister Wives stars recently came together for a memorial service honoring Garrison, held by the Nevada National Guard in Las Vegas on March 9. According to The U.S. Sun, reports surfaced regarding Kody's demeanor during the event, noting his apparent reluctance to engage with his ex-wives Janelle, Christine, and Meri despite attending alongside Robyn.

An insider revealed insights into Kody's emotional state, describing him as "not okay at all. He's retreated entirely." The source emphasized to the publication that "he gets into dark places when he gets upset, so he's just in a very dark place right now," indicating he's currently grappling with depression. Garrison's estrangement from Kody, along with his other children Gabe and Leon, had been well known in the Sister Wives community. Janelle even mentioned this estrangement to the authorities during their investigation into Garrison's sudden passing, as detailed in a police report obtained by The U.S. Sun.

Kody's Depression Is Harming His Marriage To Robyn

The source went on to allege that Kody's depressed mental state is concerning, with the insider shedding light on his current emotional struggles. As seen on Sister Wives, Kody tends to retreat into darkness when upset and is currently in a very dark place. Kody tends to internalize his feelings and bury them, focusing on keeping his emotions to himself.

Despite the rumored marital discord between Kody and Robyn, it's doubtful they would divorce unless Kody continued to push Robyn away over a long period. However, Kody's tendency to withdraw in times of grief and distress prompts him to blame his wives for issues, and now that's only Robyn. This continued behavior will cause serious relationship issues with Robyn moving forward.

How Can Robyn Help Kody?

The best thing Robyn could do for Kody is encourage him to get into grief counseling. Many people have a difficult time dealing with grief, especially those who tend to ignore their feelings. A therapist who specializes in grief will be able to help Kody work through the incredible trauma he has just endured. Additionally, a mental health professional will help Kody be able to communicate more effectively with Robyn and trust her with his issues. It's unclear where Sister Wives season 19 stands, but Kody, Meri, Robyn, Janelle, and Christine need to prioritize their mental health.

However, if therapy isn't on the table, Robyn can help Kody by assuring him she's there for whatever stage of grief he's in. Even if he doesn't want to talk about it, she can talk him through issues when they come up. She can also give him space and the grace to grieve the way he needs to. Robyn seems to be the one Brown wife who understands Kody, and while it's not fair, her patience and commitment to Kody will help them get through this terrible time. However, Kody would benefit from the help of a mental health professional.

Sister Wives is available to stream on Discovery+ and TLC Go.
