Ho Kola. Got this to replace the hardback copy I had been given by my Grandfather (Nakota) in the 1970's that has continued its journey elsewhere. This book & "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee should be compulsory reading by H.S. Graduation in America. They define the Native American Culture and the Way of the People and the FIRST & TRUE American Genocide... the ONLY Indigenous Culture of North America & the ONLY Culture to be dwarfed and forgotten by the Imported Whiners that will-not/cannot fight to effect change in their own Homelands. The one that is omitted from our education & society; the one that Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Christians, Atheists, Soldiers & Citizens all contributed to but now do not even include in their rhetoric of injustice, slavery and genocide. Blacks the tribal culture that joined their former Masters (Buffalo Soldiers)in their genocide against us; yet now whining about their slavery and oppression here. If Buffalo Soldiers had been the ones killing Blacks the whole Nation would be in an up roar...WHAT HYPOCRISY! Blacks were even buried with Whites while Native Americans & Jews were buried together elsewhere...Jews are also a Tribal Culture...Hmmmmm. Condition was as described by seller..(only one lightly pencil marked short paragraph in entire book); and that was easily & completely removed. This could easily been missed or forgotten...So no foul or complaint intended.The package arrived early & well packed. I highly recommend this book & seller. I would have no hesitation in future transactions.

this is replacing an old time favorite book. while I sometimes find the writing a little stilted and the illustrations of the shields a little too WOO WOO, the reminder that there are always other ways of looking at situations is often necessary. Political and religious arguments come to mind, but even when dealing with our spouses, our parents, our children - it is always calming to go to this book and be reminded that there are different points of view. If you want to win an argument, help others, its always best to be able to understand them as well as yourself, and this book is that constant reminder. I was given a copy of this back in the 70's and loved it but somehow lost track of it in the years between children and grandchildren. Now that they're old enough to listen a little I had to get another copy so I could inspire them with same curiosity and self confidence these stories inspired in me. Even though this book has some inaccuracies it is close enough to the original tales to respect the culture and updated just enough to keep kids interested and to inspire Tribal Pride. I was quite pleased to find this First Edition in really nice condition with just a few small tears in the dust jacket and I hope to corner the Storm and get his autograph one day soon.

A beautiful book - sometimes disturbing and exceedingly sad, as it documents what happened to Native peoples at the hands of the settlers; treaties broken, massacres, etc. The author is a spellbinding storyteller and the illustrations - a series of earth-based mandalas, (I imagine these could be shield or drum paintings) are stunning. I originally saw the book and wanted it just for the illustrations - but then i started reading it and I could not put it down. Thoughtful, thought provoking, and very beautiful book with a lot of wisdom within its pages.
