Earlier this year, Shang-Chi star Simu Liu opened up about overcoming childhood trauma and finding peace with his parents.
During an interview with People, he recalled growing up in Harbin, China, with his grandparents until he was 4 years old. "With my grandparents, I felt completely safe," he said. "To me, that's what home is."
After joining his parents in Canada, "it was very clear to me early on that [they] wouldn't be able to provide that environment." As he grew up, Simu and his parents fought over cultural differences and their demand for perfection.
After he graduated from business school and landed a job as an accountant, Simu said his parents were proud of him for the first time. But he was laid off eight months later and decided to pursue his dream of acting. His relationship with his parents fell apart.
On his mom's 60th birthday, he wrote her an eight-page letter addressing all the feelings he'd kept inside, and she was moved to tears. "It was the first time we really talked about those issues. We both acknowledged that we were flawed human beings trying to do our best."
And now, Simu is spoiling his parents!
The actor recently shared a pic of himself in a Tesla with his parents checking out the car behind him. "Bought my mama and papa a brand new Tessie!!" he wrote in the caption.
"My parents continue to surprise me every day with their capacity for growth and empathy. This is but a tiny token of gratitude."
"Your boy might be 33 and a Marvel superhero, but he needs his mama to set him straight every once in a while. Thanks, ma. I know what I have to do," he concluded.
A man working through his trauma, finding peace, and showing love to his parents?! We love to see it!
