In costume party season, the pressure is on to host a fun, unique party. One idea for a fun party theme is encouraging your guests to choose a costume that starts with a specific letter of the alphabet.

Here are some ways to do that:

  1. Allow guests to dress up in a costume related to their initials (or just their first names if you want to narrow their choices).
  2. Ask guests to dress up in costumes related to your initials.
  3. Choose one or two letters to inspire their costumes. These could be randomly or deliberately chosen.

When you first send out invitations, it's possible that your guests will be confused about what you're asking them to do. To avoid confusion, be sure to explain the idea thoroughly since, if your guests are confused, they might not dress up. Even worse, they might skip your party altogether.

This article will give you some ideas for costumes that start with the letter "I" – some based on famous characters or people.

If you have any other ideas, please put them in the comments section so you can help other people, too.

Have a fantastic party!

Characters and Costumes Beginning With "I"

1. Incredible Hulk, The: The Incredible Hulk is a comic book hero who has appeared many times on screen. His main superpower is his incredible size and strength, which is activated in times of emotional stress. Wear ragged brown shorts and paint your body green.

2. Ibiza Club-Goer: Ibiza is one of the Balearic islands off the coast of Spain. It is best known as a tourist destination for young people looking to party hard. Ibiza's motto clothing-wise is: "Less is more." In that vein, you can wear almost anything lightweight, glitzy, and skimpy. You can also supplement your costume with UV makeup or body paint. Animal onesies are popular as well.

3. Icarus: Icarus is a well-known character from Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun in his eagerness to escape from the island of Crete. The heat from the sun melted the wax holding his homemade wings together. Wear a Greek costume with broken or droopy wings.

4. Ice Maiden or Queen: This character is open to interpretation, but generally, the ice queen is depicted wearing silver or bluish-white robes with glittery silver hair and a crown of icicles. If time or ambition allows, a face design of frost tattoos could be effective. You can look to Disney's Frozen for some other ideas on the costume.

5. Ice Skater: The modern ice skater outfit offers the opportunity to wear something sleek and colourful in stretch-knit or lycra, often accentuated with glitter or sequins. Men wear outfits featuring a deep V-neck, and women typically wear skirts that allow for plenty of movement and drama. You can either carry skates with you or modify your shoes to look like figure skates.

6. Iceberg: An iceberg is perhaps not the most practical costume suggestion, but it could certainly come in handy for a Titanic party. The best approach is to wear a semi-transparent material over a haphazardly shaped base, possibly accentuated with penguin or polar bear accessories. You could also just wear the top of an iceberg and claim that the rest is hidden. If you can find a model liner to balance on your head, it might add to the effect and would certainly impress other party-goers.

8. Ice Cube: An ice cube could be a smaller-scale version of the above iceberg costume, perhaps used in conjunction with a novelty foam martini glass costume. You can easily make this costume out of a cardboard box and bubble wrap. Alternatively, you could dress as the rapper Ice Cube.

Complete the look with either a fake or real septum piercing.

11. Igglepiggle: Igglepiggle is a large blue creature from the British pre-school children’s TV series In the Night Garden…. He doesn’t say much, tends to fall over backwards if he’s surprised, and usually leaves the garden in a boat, which he sails using his red blanket. Wear a blue pillow-like costume. If a costume is available to purchase, it will be mascot-style.

12. Igor: Igor is typically a stock character from classic horror movies in which he plays a henchman or minion to a mad scientist. Often, Igor is deformed in some way, e.g. hunchbacked. The costume may derive from a character like the Hunchback of Notre Dame or another stock grotesque character. Wear a cloak and disfiguring make-up such as a drooping eye.
