This was the highlight of our weekend North Shore trip. We entered at Black Beach Park. Three of the four of us are hikers, one is not. The three of us traversed somewhat difficult rocks and sort of trails to get to the REAL Black Beach. So if I were to do it again, I'd head for the parking lot furthest south. While it was all pretty, the REAL Black Beach is breathtaking. Absolutely without question, our group's favorite stop. Excellent views, great rock hunting, and adventuresome climbing out towards the point for those risky enough (we were not ;-). Picnic areas available.

What makes Tettegouche the premier state park for me is two incredible hikes it has. Equal to the hike along the Baptism River and High Falls, the hike to Shovel Point is amazing and one of my favorite of the trip. At first it looks like a short hike to the lake before turning east and climbing the hills which lead to cliffs. Over the cliffs you get amazing views of the lake and other formations like Palisade Head as well a sea caves carved by the Lake Superior waves in the rock. Finally you come to a point that has great views of the lakeshore to the east. It is not a hard hike, only 1.2 miles and 250 elevated feel. However it truly is one of the most beautiful hikes of the North Shoe.

The hiking at Tettegouche was my favorite of all the places I hiked on my trip to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and that included 2 National Parks, 1 Wisconsin State Park and 7 Minnesota State Parks. Between hiking the cliff shores of Lake Superior to Shovel Point or the Baptism River to High Falls, this park has the best scenery, forest and waterfront that the upper Midwest has to offer. I can't say enough good things about my time here, and while the pictures are great, they won't do it justice. I highly encourage you to go and experience for yourself.

For me, the time I spent on Minnesota's North Shore was the best of my visit to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, and the highlight of the North Shore was Tettegouche State Park. For me the thing that puts Tettegouche a shad ahead of Gooseberry Falls is the Baptism River.

Like so much of the North Shore beauty, it is rivers draining the Boundary Waters over an undulating topography that creates waterfalls and canyons. In Tettegouce, you are blessed with the High Falls of the Baptism River and the canyon mouth that empties into Lake Superior. It is also the water that provides for some of the thickest most verdant foliage. Walking the trails here felt like you had an extra dose of oxygen with all the plants. The beauty of the lush forest along the Baptism is just another reason to love this area.

I hiked the from the bridge to above High Falls and then all the way to the mouth and back to the bridge, in total about 3.3 miles and 500 vertical feet. The highlight is probably the High Falls that were as powerful as any I saw in Minnesota. However, the hairpin canyon below the bridge to the mouth at the lake was also beautiful. Walking the pebble beach was fun and I saw dozens of crawfish. I will say they did not like the cold lake water, but they were climbing all over the pebble beach.

There are great things to see in the upper Midwest but be sure to see the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is impressive and one of its most beautiful natural assets is the Baptism River. Be sure to come here and hike.

My family and friends used to come up along Lake Superior's North Shore often in the 1970's and 1980's. This was one of our favorite places. Back then, when you got to the falls, you scrambled down a makeshift trail to the base of the falls, and then hauled yourself back up the same way you came. Not for the out of shape.
Now, it is easy peasy. Since 2005, there has been a wooden stairway going down to the falls. It makes it so much easier.
Some of the signage along the trail is misleading, pointing to the SHT, i.e. the Superior Hiking Trail. At one of these signs, someone added a notation "falls" and a small arrow pointing left. Otherwise, look for the wooden stairs.
The trail is not long and not strenuous, other than maybe the stairs for those not in shape. It is *not* handicap accessible.
There is a primitive rest room available by the parking lot.
There are no signs along highway 61 for it. Look for a green sign that says, "Caribou River." They are on both sides of highway 61. The parking lot is next to the river.

Nice place to stop to see the lake up close. Beautiful marina with public boat launch and ample trailer parking. Picnic area very nice and clean.

Silver Bay, Minnesota is known for taconite shipping, a lesser grade iron ore rock, Just a few blocks off highway 61 us a statue called "Rocky Taconite" dedicated to the ingenuity that made this all possible. The statue sits by itself along Outer Drive, with a metal info board on its base explaining the history and significance of the statue.

Nice course but ruined by the Superintendents mouth. Casual conversation with a young lady employee in the bar/pro shop area and Super walks in mocking what my wife was saying. Later as we were finishing our round, her and what I assume were a couple locals were racing around the course acting like juveniles playing speed golf. We had intended to play the course again the next day but because of her, we opted to spend more money and drive further to Superior National. A very nice course ruined by a her mouth.

We really enjoyed this ropes course. You first start by watching a safety video. The staff gets you kitted out in a harness and then there’s a practice course the staff walk you through.

There’s many different courses and levels to choose from. All the courses start from the same starting point and you can go as many times as you like before your time runs out (you get 2.5 hours). They like you to start on a green and then a blue course before attempting the black. The black is pretty challenging! There’s early exit points if you find the course you are in is too difficult. There’s lots of staff around to help and they were all very patient and nice.

    Tips:
    - go to the bathroom before putting in your harness!
-dress in layers and bring a snack and water. The parking lot is a short hike from the park but there’s an unsecured space to leave your things (don’t leave valuables there).
-book online. It’s cheaper and if you show up they may be fully booked.
-You WILL need gloves. We brought our own but you can buy them there.
