I made the mistake of going in here on a very hot day because I didn't want to walk the few extra blocks to the grocery store. The creepy uncle / clerk guy was up my ass like oh ur new on the area I haven't seen you before where do you live , what do you do, etc etc , it was like a creepy Spanish Inquisition- I tried to be polite , but I was very uncomfortable. I mentioned my fiancé hoping that would calm him down, didn't work lol then he tells me the total , what?!?!? Nothing had prices and as others have said they charge insane prices (and I just moved here from nyc so my bar for high prices is pretty high and I'm still saying they r crazy high) anyway if that had been it maybe I would have went back there again one day if I was in a super rush - BUT as I'm about to take my bags and leave he asked me my name - and I said "fatima" he goes what? I repeated myself , and he visibly scrunched up his face like he was about to spit on the floor made a noise of disgust and spun around and stomped off - I'm not used to such obvious racism- but damn this was one for the record books - I will never go to this place again - you have been warned

I used to live across the street from this place and every other review I've read on here is correct: NO prices on anything except for a few bags of chips, and you never know how much they will charge you for items until you get your final total. I suppose it's all a scam to rip off the young hipsters who live in the loft apartments nearby when they come in drunk.
They don't have a public restroom, but if they did, I doubt that they'd have an dyson airblade.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sasha G.Richmond, VA04May 12, 2018
Please don't shop here. Ever. Like others have said, there are no prices on any items and whoever's working the register won't willingly tell you your total. Once you do find out, it's very overpriced. I guess this place might be ok if you like surprises that involve throwing your money away.

I haven't experienced any rude encounters with staff as others, actually my interactions with whoever is working is always very pleasant. They have a pretty good beer selection, and they let dogs in.
But this place is severely overpriced, and they know it. NOTHING is marked with a price.
I got a six-pack, a stick of deodorant, and almond milk - my total was 31 dollars and some change.
DAFUQ.
bum-town.
Would like to utilize this place more often as I live right down the street, but it's a bit of a scam, and as a consumer I don't like being taken advantage of. I'm more than aware of the price paid for convenience, but there's wayyy too many other shops in the same vicinity, who sell the same products to be ripping people off like that.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alexander R.Richmond, VA08Mar 18, 2017
If I could give zero stars I would. I walked in to buy a bottle of San Pellegrino soda water. It routinely sales for $1.99 on sale at Kroger. There were no prices on anything in the store so you have no idea what anything costs. That was the first sign of a scam. Secondly they have no readout of what things cost when you ring things up, and from what I understand there are different prices at different times for everything depending on who is at the counter. The bottle of San Pellegrino was $7.99 only six dollars over the regular cost . Good luck to people who own the store ...you're going to go out of business in no time. Richmonders are fiercely loyal and you are rip off artists.....Word travels fast.

This place is down right HORRIBLE. The owner is rude, annoyed by customers general presence in the store, always distracted, slow, and openly displays how you're bothering him for simply trying to purchase someone in his place of business, purchase something that is, for the record, ridiculously overpriced. I have been charged ridiculous amounts of money for common items, only to be greeted with the worst service and attitude. The marks ups are obscene, but I have willingly gone here during desperate times when I just needed a container of milk, a 6-pack or a pack of smokes due to sheer matter of convenience knowing the prices are crazy. And the fact that I literally have to ask the owner every time I'm being rung up "how much?" because there is no digital screen to tell you the price you're paying and the owner doesn't even give me a balance, just holds his hand out to take my card. Like, excuse me, are you going to tell me
how much this transaction costs or just expect me to willingly hand you my credit card? A little obvious that he KNOWS he is ripping you off, especially when I have to ask you "how much" for you to mumble something incoherent so that I ask you again, for you to tell me you're charging me $13 for a gallon of milk and a pack of camel cigarettes. I'm from New York City and have paid more expensive prices here than Bodegas in Manhattan. Save yourself some money, patience and peace of mind by walking the extra few blocks to Farm Fresh, which is also terrible, but compared to this place is a dream.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Corey D.Los Angeles, CA6913Mar 5, 2017
Prices are criminal. They don't list prices on products so a few non alcoholic drinks and a couple bags of chips came out to $46. Then the cashier didn't tell me how much it cost. I didn't think about it because how much could it be? Word to the wise avoid this place.

If you are prepared to be greeted with contempt for being a customer, then this is the place for you! I personally enjoy the 'you can't see what I'm typing on the iPad upcharge that comes with visiting this market, which seems like poor practice considering not only that it is a business but also the proximity of Shockoe Heights Market to FarmFresh. I made the mistake of taking three visiting friends there to buy craft beer--the 'clerk' blew up when we made a rather innocuous comment about being ID'd, going into a rather long rant about morality associated with the carding process. I found this moral high ground tirade laughable, as Shockoe Valley Heights Market proudly displays an extensive headshop's selection on the checkout counter--which I can only assume is OK to the 'clerk' since no doubt the collection of pipes and glass pieces and grinders are used for tobacco... Cheap shots and sarcasm aside, this place is a nightmare. The clerk/owner is ruder than anyone should ever be when accepting money willingly given to him by customers, and they offer absolutely nothing you cannot get anywhere else. FarmFresh is three blocks up Main Street, making this market and its absolutely repugnant excuse for a clerk totally avoidable.

The previous reviewer was spot on. I never really had a problem with the minimum 300% markup and being overcharged with faulty ring ups. I knew what I was getting into. I would frequent this shop when overworked and meeting deadlines because it is half a block away vs a few blocks to the grocery store. No attitude from me- I know the drill. But you will be treated horribly. A simple greeting will be met with either open hostility on a good day or an insane diatribe on another. If you fail to get the point it will be reiterated to you in any way possible that the people who run this place would rather be stabbing you to death than fleecing you for your money and being rude about it. Sucks for them, meanwhile. But truly I have a strong sense that it's more than run of the mill rudeness. There's a disproportionate tension that often feels eerily close to violence. It's much cheaper and less stressful to have food delivered. Either that or go the few blocks to the grocery store if you want to preserve peace of mind and maybe even personal safety.
