He meets the brilliant but eccentric Holmes when the latter, who serves as a consultant to Scotland Yard, advertises for a flatmate. Almost as soon as Watson moves into the Baker Street flat, they are embroiled in mysteries, and Sherlock's nemesis, Moriarty, appears to have a hand in the crimes. Critics Consensus

Smart, unpredictable, and terrifically written, Sherlock puts a contemporary spin on the legendary detective, thanks in part to a commanding lead performance from Benedict Cumberbatch.

David d I am a bit disappointed, to be honest. Why ? On the plus side, the series provides intriguing puzzles for Holmes and the audience. On the minus side however, the screenplay and acting does not get the viewer emotionally involved. At all ! Plus somehow, in spite of the mystery, about halfway through the viewer can already guess the end - you do not need to be Sherlock for that ! And last, it seems like some good actors got handed the wrong kind of lines and attitudes to display: in the second episode for instance, a supposedly ruthless triad is introduced, but it's leader, female 'general' Shan does not come across as scary at all. Martin Freeman as Watson is sympathetic enough, but in the same episode his 'tough soldier' experience is nowhere to be seen when he and his friend are kidnapped and threatened by the same Shan. 'Sherlock' is a nice enough buddy movie for Freeman and Cumberbatch but it is all a bit unbalanced andI fail to see where the high ratings come from, unless this series was meant for young teenagers instead of an adult audience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Ershamp B one of the best TV shows I have ever watched. Series 1-3 were incredible with 4 still being brilliant but not quite as good as the others. 9.5/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/12/23 Full Review ErinVlogs Been one of my favourite tv shows for years, I absolutely love the Sherlock Holmes stories and I really hope they make a movie at some point. Such easily loveable characters and amazing adventures. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Pierre-Olivier P One of the best series ever produced by the BBC. Benedict Cumberbatch is a perfect fit for the role, the stories are well-written and the touch of humour always happens at the right moment. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/23 Full Review Isabelle S I love Sherlock Holmes and this version with Benedict Cumberbatch was honestly just chefs kiss also his and Watson relationship and character development was impeccable they were end game Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/23 Full Review Berit v I just love this version of Sherlock and the bond between him and Watson. I thought it was going to be just more of the same with all the Sherlock-content there is out there, but it kept my interest all the way through and was very entertaining to watch! Alyssa Rosenberg The Atlantic Sherlock demonstrates, bringing Holmes and Watson into the 21st century ought to have been, well, elementary. Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Suzi Feay Financial Times All right, the dangling ending was corny, Moriarty unveiled was just silly and I could do without the nudge-nudge hints of gay goings-on, but Gatiss's finale was spectacular, and he makes a horribly creepy Mycroft to boot. Sep 10, 2018 Full Review Serena Davies Daily Telegraph (UK) Sherlock worked because it was having fun. It also let down the po-faced pretence that the suffocating abundance of TV detective shows often labour under: that the detective actually cares about the victims. Feb 17, 2017 Full Review Kanishk Devgan Film Companion Its compelling take on the titular character, with a star-making performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, will feel reminiscent of the modern-day, rocambolesque capers of Assane. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher The cleverness of the writing, the charm of Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson, the wit of the visuals, the sheer all-encompassing magnificence of it... Everything about it is perfect. Even the score is amazing. Apr 8, 2019 Full Review Melissa Crawley The Patriot Ledger The expert sleuthing remains, but everything else about this three-part series has been stylishly updated to produce a fun, smart and entertaining drama.
