Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.

He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.

His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Best collection of Sherlock Holmes

Best collection of Sherlock Holmes
This is likely the best collection of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle available. Although a hefty paperback, it's easy to hold while relaxing in the Lazy Boy. As someone who needs eyeglasses to read anything, I found the font size is just fine. On top of that, you can't beat the price!

I'll refrain from reviewing the content of the stories here because, quite frankly, better people than me have done so in the past, both on an off Amazon.

This review is in reference to the collected edition of these stories, specifically the one titled "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume I", as originally published by Bantam Classics in paperback format in 1986, and later released on the Kindle Store through Random House LLC. This edition features 4 novels and 56 short stories, with a forward by Loren Estleman. The cover of the current paperback (and the Kindle book) is an attractive black and white photograph of a gentleman walking away from camera (Sherlock Holmes, presumably).

I go into such great detail describing this edition because there are a lot of cheap versions of the Sherlock Holmes collections floating around on the Kindle store. This is in large part due to the fact that the stories are now in the public domain, so just about anyone can release them at any price. You'll see collections drifting around in a price range from Free to $5.99 and up. The Bantam Classics edition is currently $4.99, and it's an absolute steal at the price. If you're going to purchase the stories, this is the book to get.

The reason for this is simple: the Bantam Classic Kindle edition is not only properly indexed but properly formatted as well. This is a lot more than you can hope for with a number of the free versions you'll see on the Kindle store. I initially had an edition on my Kindle that claimed to be illustrated (it wasn't) and it also suffered from terrible formatting: misspellings, random numbers popping up in the middle of sentences, improperly formatted paragraphs, and little in the way of search-ability within the book. The Bantam Classics version is in much better shape, and is as far as I can tell identical to the paperback printing that can currently be purchased at bookstores (I own this paperback, but find it incredibly uncomfortable to hold at over 1,000 pages long, and so decided to double dip on the Kindle version).

If you want to read the most well formatted digital version of Sherlock Holmes currently on the market, this is the one to have. Don't settle for the lesser clones floating around out there, pay a few bucks extra for quality.

I never read Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I read history, political science or economics. But when I read fiction, I like a good mystery and I especially love the Victorian era. In fact, I never even watched the old black and whites with Basil Rathbone that my brother was always glued to. I had NO idea what I was missing. Not being a short story person per se, I've found myself engrossed in every one of the these. Mr. Doyle was a very creative, imaginative and prolific writer and while he's not the only one, I personally believe him to be the best when it comes to the short ones which I usually find boringly unimaginative and rarely read. Not so here. I absolutely Love this book and found myself as engrossed in reading them as my brother did in watching them. I don't have a favorite because I like them all and can see why some people have read them again. They are that good!
The book is well organized with every story indexed. Amazon came up with a new font designed especially for the Kindle while I was reading this. I forget what it was called, but I downloaded it to try and it really does seem to make reading easier.

I've three stories left in this book and then I'm off to purchase Volume II.

It was such a pleasure to revisit some of these classic tales again for the first time since my teenage days. In addition to being packed full of brilliant stories, I really liked the format of the book as well -- although it's thick (just over 1000 pages) it's small and compact, which is good because you won't be able to put it down and thus will end up taking it with you everywhere you go! At least I did.

I saved the first two lengthier stories-- A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four-- for rainy evenings and started off with the shorter stories, which can be enjoyed "on the go", like bite-sized literary treats. Each tale is entertaining and captivating in its own way and the characters and situations are so brilliantly portrayed that you'll quickly forget you're reading fiction. Conan Doyle's writing style sweeps the reader back to the days of gas-lit London and makes you feel like you're right in the middle of everything that's happening.

The chemistry between Watson and Holmes is just delicious and while each story has a serious element to it, there is lots of humour sprinkled throughout. I think "A Study in Scarlet" is one of Conan Doyle's finest achievements as a writer and held me captive until the wee hours of the morning, and that's the sort of thing you want in good fiction. Looking forward to devouring Volume II.

I definitely enjoyed reading (and re-reading) the adventures of the famous sleuth! The stories chosen depict a very acute image of Sherlock Holmes and if we read between the lines, there's no question about his being an anti-hero, appearing a "good" character at moments and a "scornful" one at others. Definitely well-written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
