The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a 1939 private detective mystery film starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. It also features Ida Lupino, George Zucco, and Henry Stephenson. It is the second of fourteen films in the Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes series.
Synopsis: Private detective Sherlock Holmes rushes to court with evidence certain to convict his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty of murder; however, Holmes arrives a moment too late, as a verdict of not guilty has just been rendered in the case. Upon leaving the courtroom, the acquitted Moriarty then tells Holmes that, insofar as he knows that Holmes is the only person alive who is capable of putting him behind bars in the future, he, Moriarty, will therefore proceed to pull off the crime of the century—utterly destroying Sherlock Holmes reputation in the process—so that he, Moriarty, will then be able to retire in perpetual peace from his life of crime. Now put on notice of the challenge he faces, Holmes must marshal all of his deductive and investigative skills if he wishes to be the victor in the inevitable coming battle with Moriarty.
