Considering staying at the Meadows and driving to relatives in Jersey City the next day. Google directions says 6 hours. But I thought takes 3 1/2 hours at 25 mph to get out of there. Realistic to get to Jersey in 6 hours?

293 helpful votes The speed limit in SNP is 35 mph. Big Meadow Lodge is located at MM 51. The Thornton Gap Entrance is located at MM 31.5 and the Front Royal Entrance is at MM 0.5
If you drive the speed limit and exit at Thornton Gap, it should take you about 35 minutes to get through the park. From Thornton Gap Entrance to Jersey City (according to Google Maps), it's another 5 hours. So the total driving time would probably be around 5hrs. 45 minutes to 6 hours.
If you exit at Front Royal, it should take you about 90 minutes to get through the park. From Front Royal Entrance to Jersey City (according to Google Maps) is around 4.5 hours. So, the total driving time would be about 6 hours.
Six hours would be a realistic driving time IF you don't get stuck behind a slow vehicle on Skyline Drive and can maintain that 35 mph speed and IF you don't encounter any traffic problems after leaving the park. Note: Skyline Drive is a 2-lane road with no passing zones. If you get stuck behind a slow driver, you have to hope they pull out at one of the scenic overlooks to let you get by.

212 helpful votes Leave Big Meadows and head to Swift Run Gap exit > Harrisonburg Route 33 > 81 North > 78 > Jersey City.
from Big Meadows to Swift Run Gap about 30 minutes drive, continue to Harrisburg / 81 about 30 minutes. From Harrisonburg to J.C. Showing 9 + hours without breaks.
This is the route I frequently take 78 > 287 to Northern N.J.
Edited: 1 year agoI don't think that is going to happen, myself. Google tends to underestimate time, in my experience, and it varies by day and time of day. right now it is closer to 5 hrs from Front Royal to Jersey City.
There is a lot of road work around Harrisburg PA, I just went through there a few days ago and you could barely move for many miles due to road work (narrowing it down to one lane). So I'd add on another hour at least as an estimate.
