What a great way to learn Shakespeare!!
Real actors taking about the play while with clips of every production of that play ever made and watching young actors prepare for future performance. Wish I could have watched this when I was in night school !!

Frustrating but has to get 5 stars

Episode 1 with Helen Hunt is brilliant; I learnt a lot about a play I thought I knew pretty well and the series gets 5* for this episode alone.

Episode 2 on the other hand was frustrating; F Murray Abraham was an inspired choice to present this episode but most of the clips were from Trevor Nunn's failed setting of MOV; I say failed because setting the play in the early 20th century and yet having a plaintiff legally win a claim to extract a pound of flesh was absurd. Actors in 1920/30s suits juxtaposed with Shylock wielding his knife in a modern courtroom makes for bizarre incongruity. Using the Elizabethan language and the literal pound of flesh retribution in Nunn's 'updated' setting was absurd. Also, given that Abraham was in 'Scarface' with Al Pacino, and given that they had interviews with Jonathan Pryce (because of his superb Globe Shylock) who was in 'Glengarry Glenross', also with Al Pacino, I figured they were they teasing early on when no mention of the Al Pacino Shylock was made! The opportunity here around these three amazing actors, who've worked together in iconic films, and have all three played this immortal role, could have been very special but, alas, all we really get is Nunn's drab 'update', clip after clip after clip.

Still recommend you watch it but episode 2 was a missed opportunity.

Reviving once again new interest in the old bard

This tour de force of recent productions of several of Shakespeare's plays, hosted by actors playing the leads is remarkable. We are able to comprehend the plot and gain insight into the motivations and character of some of the roles. Somewhat confusing is the lightning-quick switching back and forth between the various productions, sometimes so different that we are astonished they are using the same script. Nevertheless, the benefit of this technique is to show contrasting and complementary interpretations of the scenes, adding dimensionality to the text. Highly recommended both as a refresher for Shakespeareophiles and as an introduction to the video-game generations.

Mostly filler but some good grains among the chaff

In season 3 episode 1 we get “Much Ado About Nothing” pulled apart and recombined by looking at video clips from various movie presentations and comments from the actors and experts on the subject.

No matter what you think about this presentation it helps very much when you decide to watch one or more of the movies/plays.

An insight is that the way that the word “Nothing” is pronounced in Shakespeare’s time would have been “noting.” Noting suggests overhearing.
