Audie Murphy is again the kid who puts on a badge to catch the bad guy, skillfully played by Barry Sullivan. On the way back to town the two develop a curiously close relationship - Sullivan passes up several chances to get away - but in the end Sullivan "asks for it" and Murphy obliges.

There’s a lot of 3:10 to Yuma — both of them — here, with the charming outlaw casually and carefully seducing the representative of law and order. Audie Murphy’s Seven Jones is presented as far younger and more naive than either of the versions of Dan Evans offered in the Yuma movies, something which perhaps makes the insistent flirtation to which he is subject all the more uncomfortable. Of all the westerns I've seen so far, this one has got protagonist with the strangest (if not one of) name. The name is Jones, Seven Ways From Sundown Jones, a newly promoted young Texas Ranger who is assigned with a task of bringing in famous outlaw Jim Flood alive. After skipping some segments of the movie, Jones is able to capture Flood and on the way back to Texas, the two men despite their differences bonded and gain mutual respect for one another. But at the end the secret broke out and it becomes apparent that who is black and who is white.

Audie Murphy as a rookie Texas Ranger discovers that just because the guy he's after is an outlaw, it doesn't necessarily make him a bad person. It's the bounty hunters and superiors who are the snakes in the film. But Murphy's sworn to that badge and his brother was a Ranger who was killed in the line of duty. The duty-bound, idealistic, and stubborn attitude he portrays is tested when he captures a popular outllaw Jim Flood played by Barry Sullivan. The film's allegiance angle shows how strong Seven's ties are to what he believes in compared to his growing admiration for the outlaw played by Barry Sulliivan, who is a popular figure in some places while in others he's a wanted man. Shot in Eastmancolor, this definitely was more than just a decent western and almost as good as the Bud Boetticher films with Randolph Scott in their deceptive looking simplicity.
Audie Murphy's character in this film is called Seven. I wish I was called Seven. And Seven Days from Sundown is just a great name for a film, if not for a man.
The movie as a whole is one of a slew of interesting Audie Murphy Westerns made in the '50s and '60s, forming a loose, cool gang with those offbeat, complex and mature Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott starring vehicles shot around the same time. Seven Ways from Sundown starts poorly, but just gets better and better.

Very strong male bonding western. It is intriguing how even reaching the late part of his career Audie Murphy is still cast as the newbie opositing veteran character actors (John McIntire in the first act and Barry Sulivan in the rest) particular as his face suggest anything but freshness. MOst of this plays around the dynamic between ranger Murphy and ourlaw Sullivan (in a career best performance) and there's some echoes of Murphy/Dureya relationship in Ride Clear of Diablo, but the relationship here is richer and their trip together taken by strong incident. There's a lot of good material on libertarian west. An extra half star for Murphy character actually be named Seven Ways From Sundown.

Another terrific Audie Murphy western, where he plays a novice young ranger looking to if not exactly avenge his brother's death than at least uphold the law in his memory. The film is however completely stolen by Barry Sullivan playing the charismatic outlaw that Murphy first persuades, but it later forced to form an unlikely alliance with. The interplay between the two is terrific and it has one of the all time great endings.
Sometimes a main character is so strong all the title needs is his given name. Sly Stallone gave us Rocky, Ernest Borgnine gave us Marty, Peter Boyle gave us Joe, Tom Hulce gave us Amadeus, and Audie Murphy gave us Seven Ways from Sundown. Occasionally for a sequel you need to expand on this - so we get a Rocky Balboa. Still waiting for a sequel to this one. Could have easily gone with Seven Ways from Sundown Jones.
For a while there I really didn't think I was going to ever really gel with Audie Murphy's westerns, but maybe I just watched the wrong ones at the start.
Seven Ways from Sundown (that's the full name of Murphy's character) is quite a difficult western to pin down in exactly what it wants to do or be, but it does feature some really interesting character work as well as pulling off a fine twist near its intriguingly quiet and abrupt ending. It also has that thing I always like in any film - the bad guy who's perhaps got a point.
Maybe with some more time spent on Barry Sullivan's Jim Flood, the whole film could have benefitted from…

A real, rock-solid western gem. Been watching a bunch of Audie Murphy oaters lately and this has been the best of the bunch.
The story focuses on Murphy as a young Texas ranger, who gets sent on a desperate mission to catch a legendary outlaw. He succeeds in capturing the man, but bringing him back alive proves difficult, especially as the outlaw is just so damn friendly and charismatic.
That’s really where this movie lives, off a singularly great performance from Barry Sullivan. He and Murphy have great chemistry as they travel from encounter to encounter.
Along with the quality lead performances, the film has a sharp, quippy script and a story that’s perfectly compact. No extra characters, little in the way of romance, no sassy kids or extra villains.
Just a quality little movie.
