It's an exciting story, so has universal appeal for the historian as well as those who enjoy an engrossing read. Heydrich liked to demonstrate his confidence in his total subjugation of the Czechs by riding in an open Mercedes. This proved his downfall. The actual attack on him and its aftermath make for riveting reading and the subsequent Nazi revenge for his death meted out to innocent Czech villagers is a shocking consequence as they pursue their policy of 'collective responsibility.' The fate of the village of Lidice is heartbreaking.
The betrayal of the courageous Czech operatives and their brave last stand stays with the reader. This book is a great tribute to all the brave men, whatever their nationality, who helped to contribute to the eventual demise of the Nazi evil that scourged Europe.
I strongly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys an absorbing, thought-provoking read about this period in history and the numerous acts of individual courage that illuminate it.
Unfortunately I have already read the truly exceptional "Killing Of Reinhard Heydrich" by Callum MacDonald. MacDonard's book is written later, but complete with extensive research and with - to highlight a few areas where Burgess regrettably falls short - accurate Nazi titles, a correct background of Heydrich's failures and successes, a depiction of the influence of the Czech government-in-absentia, the actual individuals and events involved in Operation Anthropoid (the real name of the assassination attempt), and a listing of the major Czech parachuting efforts. All with cited sources and detailed footnotes. Although Burgess traveled to Czechoslovakia in 1958 and attempted to work with the communist government for information, the majority of his sources appear to have been anecdotal interviews with remaining family and contacts, with "the years add[ing] the footnote of authority" (his words from the introduction).
His resources must have been limited, and his sources aging, as the result does not provide the level of accuracy that other sources and books do. If it had been presented as historical fiction, the book would have been a far more palatable read. And I probably would have liked it much better had it not presumed to define such words as "lorries" for the apparently stumbling reader. On the positive side, Burgess presented a story of heroism that needed to be told and, prior to his book and the resulting movie, was known only to a few.
