FUNERAL SERMON OUTLINES

One of my favorite books in the Bible is Ephesians. Paul wrote it as a letter to the church at Ephesus and the first chapter focused on how important that group of Christians was to God. But then we get to what we call Chapter 2 and a reality check. (God tells us that once) ''you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient...

As you prepare for this service, spend much time in prayer. There is no greater loss for a parent then when their child dies. You will need to listen more than you talk. You will need to show unbelievable grace, mercy and patience with the parents and family. This service can be molded to fit the needs of the family. Make it personal. Some of the prayers below can be changed to fit the needs that you as the pastor feel fit more appropriately. I have put brackets where you could insert a name. This service is designed to have more words of Scripture than your words. This should not be a long service. Ask the family if there is...

There are three recorded accounts in the gospel record of Jesus Christ raising people from the dead. The first of these is found in the fifth chapter of the gospel of Mark where Jesus brings back from the dead the twelve-year-old daughter of Jairus. The third instance is found in John chapter 11 where Jesus stands before the open tomb of his friend Lazarus and calls Lazarus back from the dead. The middle of these times when Jesus raised the dead is the passage of scripture which I have read to you today. On this occasion there is the widow she has lost her only son he is dead but Jesus CIrist miraculously brings the young man back to life...

The family thanks you for your presence here today. For the next few minutes, I want to speak about Heaven, the home for believers. Jesus said to His followers, ''Don't be troubled for I have a place for you. I'm coming back in order to take you to my home. Once you're there, you'll be with me forever.'' And the earliest believers took His words to heart. If you visit the ancient catacombs underneath the city of Rome, you'll the richly painted tombs of some of the earliest Christian martyrs...

Opening: We're here this morning to honor and celebrate the life of Isabella Rose Ellis. You might question the word 'celebrate'. Celebrate her life? Really Pastor Bob...celebration? And yet, that's exactly what Chris and Abby told me they want this to be. For them this is not a time of somber defeat, but hopeful victory. You might ask, ''How can that be?'' Because ultimately, Chris and Abby know it's not about how long you live on earth; it's about where you spend eternity...

Every CHRISTIAN is a ''saint'' in the eyes of God. Our brother was a saint, not because he lived a perfect life, but because he had believed in Jesus, repented of his sins, confessed Jesus as Lord and been baptized into Christ. Therefore, the righteousness of Christ was imputed to his account. His sins were washed away. He lived with the indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit and the promise of eternal life which he is now enjoying with Jesus in Paradise...

On behalf of the family, I want to take a moment to welcome you to our service today. We are here today to celebrate the life of Sgt.________. _________ was born in ______________ on August 13 in ______ and he was killed in the line of duty, serving his country and protecting our freedom on June 2, _____. Death is not the end; rather it is only the beginning of eternity. The passing of a loved one is often unexpected and always difficult. But my prayer is that the peace of God would be real in your heart and life today. Paul wrote in Philippians that ''the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension will guard your...

Our passage is a beautiful, comforting passage for such a time as this, as we commit our sister's body to the grave and grieve our lost. Let us consider Jesus' words to his disciples, as he comforts them about his own departure. Let not your hearts be troubled. Our hearts are often troubled because of the troubles of this earthly life. The psalmist in Psalm 90 sums up our lives as a span of toil and trouble. There is so much ''out there'' that is troubling; and there is plenty around us to worry about. The greatest trouble of all is parting. That was the trouble for Jesus' disciples. He speaks of parting from them. What has happened...

This sermon was used to a few words about one of the godliest women that I have ever known. I was her pastor on two different occasions and would have walked through hell barefooted and battled Satan with a squirt gun if she was by my side. We all have those special people in our lives that inspire us and ignite us for the Lord. I loved her like she was my own mother and she had a special touch from the Lord. Upon visiting her at that hospital a few days before her death, I was going to pray with her and she looked me in the eyes and said the most confident words one can say as they face the possibility of death...

Her early life was not easy. She was fortunate and blessed to have a woman of faith in her mother, but that's where her advantages stopped. According to her journal, the biological father was an alcoholic. When she was 5-years-old he burned down the house killing her cat. She went to live with her grandparents. The father was court-ordered not to see the children, but he managed to get them after school one day and hold them hostage for several hours. She never got over the feelings of loneliness, anger and fear planted in her life at that young age...

Today, we both celebrate and mourn the loss of our friend, Jim. A great father and husband as well as a pillar of our church for many years. I know of few places of greater comfort in a time of loss than Jesus on the cross. Let me show you why this. Today's Scripture. Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, ''Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'' And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood by...

I am a Pastor. It is part of my calling to help people through these times and join them as the lay their loved ones to rest. But in spite of all of that experience, death never feels normal. We always have peculiar feeling when we come to the house of mourning. There is a sense in which the death of any person who bears God's image is a tragedy, no matter their age. When Jesus came to the funeral of his friend Lazarus, ''Jesus wept''. Jesus knew better than anyone that Lazarus would soon be resuscitated and ultimately resurrected, but nevertheless, the death of his friend caused our Lord to weep. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:26 that death is an enemy that will one day be destroyed...

Wilton Smith Parr, Jr. I did not know Wilton on the same level as many of you knew him. From all accounts, however, Wilton was a very special individual. To some he was father, to others grandfather, husband, uncle, father-in-law, colleague, or friend. To God, he is a beloved child. My memories and contact with Wilton were mainly in the confines of one hospital room or another. His soft-spoken demeanor could fill a room, even without his speaking. In Wilton's latter days, a medicine patch was causing various hallucinations. I heard stories of trains scaling the walls, people hiding behind closet doors, and watched...

OPEN: In a VBS a new boy was brought into the room to join the others in a closing ceremony. The teacher, noticing that the little boy had only one hand, was concerned how the other children would embarrass him. But it got really embarrassing as she said to the children "Now, let's all build our churches. Put your hands together now, here is the church, here is the steeple . . . . " Suddenly, she was aware that she had done just what she feared the children would do. But after a moment of awkward silence, a little girl seated next to the boy with one hand held hers up and said, "Here, let's build the church together...

John 14:1-6: ''Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.'' Thomas said to Him, ''Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?'' Jesus said to him, ''I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'' Have you ever had that nagging thought in...
