Serhou Guirassy: The Exhausted Hero of VfB Stuttgart

Serhou Guirassy was so exhausted that he wasn’t even able to jump in front of the ecstatic fans. Without shoes and shaken by cramps, VfB Stuttgart’s top striker dragged himself into the corner – even the quick banana he ate on the pitch didn’t help much.

Guirassy had completely exhausted himself, pumping and torturing himself. But: His 24th goal of the season led VfB to the immensely important 1-0 (0-0) in the “Champions League final” at Borussia Dortmund – and to a record: never before has a player for the Swabians scored more often in the Bundesliga .

Only Mario Gomez scored 24 goals once in 2008/09, and Guirassy still has six games left for number 25 or more. If it weren’t for the uncatchable Harry Kane (33 goals), who however takes eight minutes longer per goal at FC Bayern, Guirassy would easily be the top scorer. Last year, Niclas Füllkrug (for Werder Bremen) and Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) scored a modest 16 goals.

The Guinean international is certainly a man of great deeds – but certainly not a man of great words. On Saturday evening he promptly boarded the VfB bus, whose license plate begins with an S and ends with a Y. Like the name of the match winner who will shoot VfB to a Champions League comeback and perhaps even runner-up status: Serhou Guirassy.

The biggest praise came from the opposing coach. Actually, emphasized Edin Terzic, the BVB central defense had this extremely dangerous man “well under control”: “But you can see what quality he has.” All it takes is one scene, one shot, albeit with the last of your strength – and the ball is in the goal.
