Secrets and Lies: Season 1 Reviews

Unfortunately, it's measured approach is a little too undramatic and unrefined, which leaves much of Secrets and Lies feeling well-produced, but hollow and whitewashed to the point it has no personality of its own.

The acting and writing make this a series not to miss. You can binge watch the first few episodes and then be a regular viewer from now till the end.

      Full Review | Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 21, 2015

The storyline in this series has a single-mindedness that might leave viewers feeling like the same note is being pounded over and over again, and it's no secret that that's not a recipe for ratings success.

Not having seen the original, it's hard to compare the two series, but the American version seems bloated. Shockers are tossed out here and there, but there is little connective tissue in the story.

Predictable whodunit packs few real surprises.

      Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 4, 2015

It's a fairly mundane mystery populated by cardboard characters with poor decision-making skills, starting with Ben, who immediately becomes the prime suspect, and his wife Christy.

Juliette Lewis, once American cinema's liveliest eccentric, is drained of life, which makes her a perfect match for Phillippe's blankness.

      Full Review | Mar 3, 2015

Phillipe isn't good, and Lewis is just plain awful. It's hard to imagine a less-convincing portrayal of a police detective.

It's the kind of story that is well told on cable, but here seems stifled by the casting to start.

The mystery is so-so, but Lewis, who has flown largely under the radar since Cape Fear, reminds us of her immense talent.

I enjoyed the first episode, but the second hour had me ready to bail.

Just as suspicion takes a little time to grow and spread, so does sophistication. But this series seems to be in a very big hurry to be over, which almost guarantees that audiences will be too.

Lewis and Philippe have enough chemistry that his underplaying and her overplaying are a match made in whodunnit heaven.

      Full Review | Mar 2, 2015

The writing is clunky, Phillippe is stiff and Lewis overacts like a cop in some parody of cop shows.

By keeping the story to one perspective the audience never feels smarter than its characters, resulting in a strong hour of revelations and breadcrumbs.

Despite its faults, ABC's drama is a winner.

      Full Review | Mar 2, 2015

Secrets and Lies doesn't need to be some deep exegesis about human frailty or the way we live now. But it doesn't impress on a plot level, either. The action just languishes.

      Full Review | Mar 2, 2015

It would be easy to dismiss ABC's latest entry in the "murder in a small town" subgenre, but by shifting its perspective from the investigators to one of the townspeople, the series breathes some life into a tired premise.

This story unfolds as if it were told by someone overdosing on Ambien.

      Full Review | Original Score: C | Mar 2, 2015

Ultimately, Secrets and Lies is satisfactory. That doesn't mean it's good, or that it can sustain its story for 10 episodes, or most importantly, that it's necessary.
