If you're a sensitive person like me with a family who can't communicate, be prepared for a good cry. This film felt so real, the acting is so good it's hardly acting at all. What can I say? Mike Leigh is a brilliant director and Brenda Blethyn deserved an Oscar for her role. I'm binge watching Vera at the moment and I remembered this film, that came out when I was 14. I was always meaning to watch it, but put it off until now. I'm glad I waited this long as I wouldn't have understood the subtle nuances of adulthood, parenthood, especially raising a child as a single mother (which I am). I am the same age now as Brenda Blethyn's character, and she reminds me of my mother. Needless to say, this film has tugged at my heartstrings in a big way. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!

Asked to review something like a DVD, one always has to wonder whether it is the physical properties of the product one is reviewing, or the intellectual value of the content. Thankfully, there are cases where this is easy, as both are well worth your while. This is a UK film, that perhaps didn't get the play it deserved in the US, but for that it is not really obscure or unknown either. Excellent performances and direction make this an evening that might bring some worthwhile introspection.

've loved this movie for years, and have a standard-issue DVD already. I bought this for the quality print I know I will get from Criterion.

I've never decided if this is a drama, melodrama, comedy or tragedy. There a bit of all four in this wonderful film from English director Mike Leigh about a middle-aged woman who suddenly discovers, three decades later, the daughter she gave away at birth when she was in her 20s ... and she's black. Many of the regulars in Leigh's repertory company are here. I think this one and "Topsey Turvey" are my favorite Leigh films, and its great that after a long time out of print, this edition from Criterion is in pristine condition and has so many extras.

Honesty and communication are important in all relationships whether as couple or a family. A slow burn character drama well worth waiting for the payoff.

At first glance I didn’t think it had a lot of features but the Leigh interview is over an hour long so well worth it.

Would recommend to anyone.

Mike Leigh's film won Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival. A young black woman decides to find her birth-mother only to discover her mother is white, just one among many of the SECRETS & LIES of this tale. A first-rate cast delivers knock-out performances. A bit on the long side, the film has both drama and comical moments, with a healthy helping of tenderness. The DVD has a good quality transfer of the widescreen original but no bonus features apart from the trailer (and a few other trailers). A first-rate comedy/drama with heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Drama
Reviewed in Canada on April 29, 2018
One of my favourite movies, ever. And, believe me, I have watched thousands of movies. Interesting fact: Although Mike Leigh clearly wrote the plot, many of the scenes were improvised. Amazing cast really played up to the challenge. Brenda Blethyn did NOT know who was playing her daughter in the pivotal scene where they meet. She was truly confused, and had to just "go with it". A touching, interesting and insightful film with some truly touching performances. Enjoyable from start to finish, but some difficult moments depicting family ties, misunderstandings, resentments and more. Brenda Blethyn and Marianne Jean-Baptiste were both deservedly nominated for Oscars; also nominated for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. Winner of the Palme D'Or and Best Actress for Blethyn at Cannes. Winner Best Actress BAFTA.

WM
5.0 out of 5 stars One of Mike Leigh's masterpieces, back in-print on an excellent-looking Blu-Ray disc
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2016
Probably Mike Leigh's biggest international success, after winning the grand prize at Cannes it did quite well in the U.S., both at the box office and at the Oscars where it was nominated for nearly ever major award. At the time, it was arguably his most accessible film and one of his most accomplished, and it remains a masterpiece, a brutal but hopeful one. Like many of his films, there's a wonderful ensemble, and Blethyn, Jean-Baptiste and Spall are especially good, delivering career performances. Much of the drama revolves around the relationship between Blethyn's character and the daughter she put up for adoption, and each and every one of their scenes is remarkable. Their first scene together in the coffee shop (which plays out in an unbroken 8+ minute take) teeters between comedy and immense sorrow, and it may very well be best thing I've seen in any of Leigh's films. I originally thought it was a tremendous bit of writing that was also incredibly demanding towards its actors, but that's not how Leigh works - his films are typically 'written' during an extensive 6-month rehearsal, where he and his actors create the scenes and dialogue through improvisation. They shape and edit this material, getting it all on paper, so by the time they get to shooting, everything is tightly scripted. However, given the way the lines and action have been conceived, the screenplay remains a very organic extension of the performers themselves. Leigh isn't the only filmmaker who's worked in this manner (and that number grows when you consider filmmakers who have crafted scenes, if not entire films, this way), but among those who are still alive and active, he certainly has gotten the most out of this approach, and "Secrets & Lies" is a marvelous example of it.

Despite its success, the DVD for this film went out-of-print in the U.S. many years ago, but thankfully it's been reissued on Blu-Ray in the U.K., and if you live in the States, I highly recommend getting a region compatible or region free player and importing this disc, because it's a wonderful looking disc. The detail is wonderful, the film grain is all intact, and the transfer is as good as one would hope, with no glaring artifacts - it looks like a film shot on film without any tomfoolery to compromise that. Certainly the best way to see this film at home, and if you're new to Mike Leigh, it's a good place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Um ehrlich zu sein ...
