Four-star forward Sean Stewart commits to Jon Scheyer, Duke basketball’s 2023 class

Christmas came early for Duke head coach-in-waiting Jon Scheyer.

Sean Stewart, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward from Windermere, Fla., announced his commitment to the Blue Devils’ 2023 class Thursday. The four-star recruit is the No. 5 power forward and No. 33 overall player in the 2023 class, based on 247sports.com’s composite rankings.

“I’ve actually been a Duke fan since around the third or fourth grade,” Stewart wrote in a blog published by SI.com Thursday. “It’s definitely been a dream of mine to play there for Duke and play in Cameron in front of the best fans in the world!”

As Scheyer prepares to succeed Mike Krzyzewski as Duke’s head coach following the 2021-22 season, his No. 1-ranked 2023 recruiting class now has two players. Caleb Foster, a 6-5 point guard from the Charlotte suburb of Harrisburg, committed to the Blue Devils’ 2023 class in September. A five-star recruit, he is the No. 9 player in the class, according to 247Sports.

Duke also has the No. 1-ranked 2022 class, which includes four of the top 15 players in the class in 7-1 center Dereck Lively, 6-6 small forward Dariq Whitehead, 6-11 center Kyle Filipowski and 6-8 forward Mark Mitchell.

Stewart, who took his official visit to Duke on Nov. 5, selected the Blue Devils over Michigan, Ohio State, Georgetown and others. He is the son of Michael “Yogi” Stewart, who played eight seasons in the NBA.

“Duke was my last visit and it just reinforced why I wanted to go there,” Stewart wrote. “My family knows Grant Hill and his family really well. Him and my dad have been friends for a long time, so to be able to play at the school he played at is pretty cool.”
