All The Latest On The "Game Of Thrones" Spin-Offs In The Works

Bloodmoon, also known as The Long Night, was set during the Age of Heroes, about 8,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Westeros would have looked very different at this time (it's loooong before dragons and Targaryens and Iron Thrones), but it's likely that there would have been (Bran!) Starks, Children of the Forest, and White Walkers in the show.

Bloodmoon made it to pilot — in other words, the first episode was created and shown to HBO. George R.R. Martin was on board as executive producer, while Jane Goldman was showrunner. The cast included Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Georgie Henley, Toby Regbo, Naomi Ackie, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Denise Gough, and Alex Sharp.

However, HBO decided not to go further with the project, and it's been canceled.

House of the Dragon is about a Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which takes place hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It was greenlit for a 10-episode series without a pilot even being produced. It premieres August 21, 2022. 

The show is based on Martin's epic Targaryen history Fire and Blood — which is not a novel with a plot so much as it is a rundown of generations of Targaryens and the events surrounding them. Martin is an executive producer, while Miguel Sapochnik, who directed some of the best Game of Thrones episodes — including "Battle of the Bastards," "Hardhome," "The Winds of Winter —  is also an executive producer as well as showrunner.

The other showrunner/executive producer is Ryan Condal, who previously wrote and produced the sci-fi show Colony. Condal wrote series, while Sapochnik is director for the first episode. Other directors include Clare Kilner, Geeta Patel, and Greg Yaitanes.

In addition to Martin, Condal, and Sapochnik, Vince Gerardis (who was one of the Game of Thrones producers) and HBO programming president Casey Bloys are both executive producers of House of the Dragon.

Skip the next bit if you want to avoid potential spoilers, but here's a very brief overview: Viserys was a well-loved king, and House Targaryen — and Westeros — thrived under his rule. Still, while he was alive, the question of who would be his heir created factions in his court. Viserys had named Rhaenyra, his daughter from his first wife, as his heir, but his second wife, Alicent, believed that her son Aegon should be next in line to the throne. Meanwhile, Viserys' brother Daemon also wanted to stake his claim.

When Viserys died in his sleep, Alicent's eldest son was crowned Aegon II, causing the outbreak of civil war between him and Rhaenyra, which became known as the Dance of the Dragons.

According to the House of the Dragon website, Daemon is "a peerless warrior and dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon"; Rhaenyra is a dragonrider and the king's firstborn who has to deal with being robbed of her birthright because of her gender; and Alicent is "the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms" who "possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen".

The Velaryons are an ancient Valyrian house, just like the Targaryens. Lord Corlys Velaryon is known as the Sea Snake and famous for his seafaring skills and powerful navy, and for making his family richer than the Lannisters. His wife, Rhaenys, is a Targaryen and cousin of Viserys, who inherited the throne over her because of his gender.

Otto Hightower is Hand of the King and father of Alicent. He views Daemon as an enemy. Mysaria is a dancer from Lys.

George R. R. Martin has said he plans at least three more stories in the series as well — possibly more — so there could be a long future for the TV series if it goes ahead and is successful. The first season will be based on "The Hedge Knight" according to Martin. 

According to Deadline, The Sea Snake explores the great sea voyages of the Sea Snake, from Pentos and Myr to Yi Ti and Leng and even the frozen seas north of Westeros. GRRM along with The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller are reportedly attached to the project.

Another live action prequel is in development called10,000 Ships, set 1,000 years before Game of Thrones and focused on the warrior Princess Nymeria (who Arya named her direwolf after) which Amanda Segel is attached to as showrunner. Another prequel, Flea Bottom, a show focused on the poorest part of King's Landing, is reported to no longer be moving forward. 

In addition to these prequel ideas, there are at least three animated series based on the world of Game of Thrones currently in development. One of them is called The Golden Empire, which is set in Yi Ti in Essos.

Kit Harrington is returning as the character that made him famous — in fact, he came up with the idea for the show. Presumably, it will be about Jon's life beyond the Wall after the events of Game of Thrones, but not much is known about the series for now.
