Scott Brown: Ayr United appoint ex-Celtic & Scotland captain as new head coach

Former Celtic and Scotland captain Scott Brown has been appointed Ayr United head coach.
The 38-year-old, who was sacked from in his first managerial job at Fleetwood Town in September, has signed a deal until June 2026 and is assisted by ex-Hibernian team-mate Steven Whittaker.
Ayr currently sit ninth in the Scottish Championship and welcome bottom side Arbroath on Tuesday.
"This is an exciting appointment," said managing director Graeme Mathie.
"I have no doubt this will be remembered as an exciting period of time on our journey."
Three other contenders were interviewed over Sunday and Monday, but chairman David Smith said Brown and Whittaker "showed lots of positive attributes that made them the preferred candidates".
Brown will be reunited at Somerset Park with former Celtic team-mate Aiden McGeady, who has a dual role as player and technical manager.
The second-tier club sacked Lee Bullen last week after a goalless draw with bottom side Arbroath left Ayr two points off the foot of the table having won once in 11 league games.
Saturday's 3-0 Scottish Cup victory against League 1 visitors Kelty Hearts under caretaker Davie White ended a run of five matches without a victory.
