I have known Schloss Berge (as. Park) since I used to visit Germany as a young boy. Returning to Germany to visit family after many absent years I decided to stay in the place of my boy hood memories. My local family said it was too expensive but I disagreed.

The hotel has only 11 bedrooms which are on the third floor, while convention and reception rooms are on the ground and first floor. The room was a double with two arm chairs, dressing table, tv and mini-bar. It did not normally come with hot drink making facilities but upon request, they provided a capsule coffee maker and replaced the used capsules daily. Fresh fruit was provided to the room each day. Our room had a shower but others have a bath.

We did not use the restaurant in the evening, as relatives insisted we ate with them, but we did have breakfast each morning. Breakfast is not included in the price of the room and at £14.95 per person per day you might think pricey, but as were stopping for 9 days the offered a too good to miss deal. They say you can eat breakfast all morning, we settled for just an hour but certainly had our fill. It does not include a full English (well I didn’t see it) but it did have the traditional continental breakfasts of cheeses, various meats, cereals, and eggs (we had scrabbled eggs every day with German bacon). Drinks were a choice of about 12 teas, coffee of course, fruit juice, etc. Although we did not participate we saw others have wine/champagne with there breakfasts and salmon with their breakfasts. All the staff was very polite, respectful and understanding (their English was much better than my German).

I was surprised to find the hotel was dog friendly, and on three separate occasions different dogs were brought into the breakfast room (although very well behaved not something I’d seen in the UK).

As the hotel is a chateau/ castle, it has it’s own moat and sits in the beautiful Schloss Berge Park, all very peaceful and above all quite.

This is a restaurant in a lovely setting with high end service and overlooks a garden. Have eaten there before but latest meal not up to usual standard. They have many game dishes on the menu but the venison was over cooked and tasteless- could have been other meat. Red cabbage nothing special. The spaetzle were homemade and best part of dish. Extensive alcohol and dessert offerings.

During a Sunday morning drive around we decided to stop in here. Apparently the restaurant has the best cake in the area. I was a little dissapointment I must admit.
On arrival we were not attended to and had to seek out assistance. We were given a table that was still dirty and not fresh. The dining area was overcrowded, but not with people. Some attention to the layout would be advisable. Our waitress appeared to be more than a little frazzle and no further attention was given past our cappuccino's and cake. The froth on the cappuccino's was bubbly and aery and covered in hot chocolate powder. Not very enjoyable. The milk tasted like it had been boiled a few times. I ordered the Black Forest Cake. It has now turned out several times where I had ordered more 'traditional' items that I was dissapointed. The thin layers of actual cake was extremely dry and consisted mostly of a ton of cream which blocked any and all possibility of tasting anything but the buttery cream. The view onto the garden was pleasant enough.

If you are planning to stay in the area this is the place to go for food and service.

The room I had was very average, with little character. However, the restaurant and even the room service serve fabulous food.

Breakfast is also a great experience.

The building and grounds are wonderful.

I'd certainly recommend this over the nearby Marriott Courtyard.

"Book early. Ask for the one suite that they have, but be prepared to pay a little more than for a standard room."
