Despite Adobe Flash shutting down back in 2020 after a long 24 years, flash games were a foundation for free online games and are still fairly popular today. Back in the earlier days of the internet, innovative game developers were determined to create something special with the limited resources they had. The flash era of online games was a golden one, often held up by its sense of nostalgia but occasionally unearthing a gem that manages to hold up to today's standards.

Rather than being viewed as full horror games, flash horror games serve best as short horror experiences by bringing in the player, enticing them, delivering scares, and not overstaying their welcome. Here are some of the best horror flash games of their time.

Updated September 26, 2023 by Christine Mendoza: Apparently, a gaming genre doesn't need consistent growth to still be popular and relevant! Regardless of Flash being dead and gone for the last two decades, the internet still managed to preserve the genre of Flash horror games and has kept many of them alive and well.

Flash horror was so prolific that even newer generations still value them as classics, keeping the demand for these terrifying relics of the past constantly growing. To help out readers who are interested in trying out some true vintage online horror, links to each game have been added as well as some other hidden gems as well.

11 Forgotten Hill Mementoes

Forgotten Hill Memories Flash Horror Game

Forgotten Hill Momentoes is a dark, harrowing point-and-click game, that focuses on death, betrayal, and sacrifice all in the name of science. The story begins with a mysterious man (the player character) as he sets out to perform some kind of alchemic sorcery, dealing with spells, pentagrams, and gratuitous amounts of human blood.

While the player does not understand what the main character's goal is from the beginning, it slowly becomes clear that whatever his goal is, it is far greater than the love of his family. As the player progresses and solves puzzle after puzzle, the shrouded mystery behind Forgotten Hill is slowly unveiled.

10 Purgatorium

Purgatorium Flash Horror Game

Purgatorium is a short horror experience rather than a full-on horror game but still manages to deliver some good scares and solid storytelling. With little to no setup or backstory, the player is immediately dropped into the terrifying world of Purgatorium.

The player suddenly awakens in an old house with no idea where they are or how they got there. All that is in front of them is an ominous rocking chair and a seemingly abandoned crib. It is the player's task to look around the room for clues to understand why they were brought there and what grim fate befell the family that lived there.

9 Crimson Room

Crimson Room Series Horror Flash Game

After a night of drinking, the player awakens to find themselves in a mysterious, unfamiliar room in the horror flash game, Crimson Room. Realizing that they are now trapped with no apparent exit or easy way out, the player must search the room for clues to free themselves.

Crimson Room is perfect for any horror fans who want to skip out on the gore and are looking for an "escape room" type game that focuses more on the thriller aspect rather than the explicit, outright horror. While the game does have some grammatical errors (as the game comes from a Japanese developer who likely used a translator), the instructions are still clear and easy to follow, making for a smooth gaming experience.

8 Goliath The Soothsayer

Goliath The Soothsayer Flash Horror Game

After the disappearance of his brother, the unnamed protagonist is left with the task of taking care of his brother's possessions after all hope of finding him alive has been lost. However, after spending a night in his brother's house, the protagonist finds himself haunted by strange noises and eventually awakens in the attic with no recollection of how he got there. Driven mad by the loss of his brother, the walls plagued with voices, and being trapped in the desolate attic, the unnamed protagonist finally takes it upon himself to find a way out and find the truth behind his brother's disappearance.

Goliath The Soothsayer then tasks the player with finding their way out of each room, scanning each section for clues. With alternate endings, Goliath The Soothsayer gives the player the ultimate choice: give into their morbid curiosity for the sake of a thrill or finally put an end to the madness, once and for all.

7 Escape The Boogeyman

Escape The Boogeyman Flash Game
  • Developer: Jetset Studios

Escape The Boogeyman is a short horror experience (now unfortunately unavailable to play) where the player is dropped into the middle of the madness right from the beginning with one simple objective: to (as the title implies) escape the terrifying boogeyman. The player must use the limited tools and resources to navigate their way through the dark halls before their flashlight dies, and the boogeyman comes to take its prey.

The dilapidated house the player must escape from is intentionally filled with confusing architecture, making the player scramble through hallways with identical doorways to amp up the fear factor.

6 Exmortis (Series)

Exmortis Flash Game

The Exmortis series is a narrative-heavy point-and-click adventure horror game where the player mysteriously wakes up in the middle of the forest and takes refuge from the freezing cold in a nearby house. As the player explores the house they discover many text documents that begin to fill in the blanks and explain more about the mysterious house and its disturbing dark past.

The Exmortis series had little to work with, but despite its simplicity, still did a great job at creating haunting environments, an immersive story, and delivering some effective scares.

5 Darkness (Series)

The Darkness Flash Horror Game

All three installments of the Darkness series are very simple-looking games. Most of its characters and environments are made in the style of MS Paint (or something similar). At first glance, most modern-day players may scoff at the idea of getting a genuinely scary experience from a game that looks so incredibly outdated. However, it's in the Darkness' surprisingly complex gameplay style that all the scares are truly found.

The Darkness follows a young girl who is pursued by a deadly ghost. The player must navigate their way out of their environment to safety by solving puzzles and evading the ghost using their "panic" button. The Darkness, despite its simplistic style, utilized an inventory system, intricate puzzles, and even a hiding mechanic whenever the killer ghost came nearby.

4 Gretel And Hansel (1 & 2)

Gretel And Hansel Flash Game

Based on the famous Brothers Grimm tale of a similar name, Gretel And Hansel is a beautifully executed horror game that was released in two parts, back in 2009 and 2010. The game is stylized as a storybook (as expected), yet despite its gorgeous watercolor aesthetic, still manages to create terrifying scenes and creatures in its own beautiful fairytale world.

Gretel And Hansel is a simple yet intriguing point-and-click horror flash game. The player takes control of a terrified Gretel as she finds out her parents plan to deal with their struggling food supply by kicking Gretel and her brother out into the dangerous woods. The pair must find a way to safely escape both their parents and the dangers of the woods.

3 The House (1 & 2)

The House Flash Game

The House 1 and 2 are some of the best games to pick up for a short yet engaging horror experience. The House is a point-and-click horror flash game that follows a fairly basic formula but still somehow manages to deliver great scares. The player navigates through each part of the mysterious house and must search for clues to discover how each member of the family that once lived there met their untimely fate.

The House 2 follows a similar formula, but this time focuses on a family adopting a mysterious young girl who ends up bringing a suffocating darkness to the household, ending in all their deaths. The House 1 and 2 both may be a bit predictable at times when put up to current-day gaming standards (as they were released back in 2005 and 2010), but it remains a classic that holds up surprisingly well!

2 Hotel 626

Hotel 626 Flash Game

Sadly, Hotel 626 is a lost relic of its time, as it was released back in 2008 but has been inactive since 2011 and is no longer available to play. Hotel 626 was a flash game but utilized live-action FMV (full-motion video) as well as 3D-rendered scenes and gameplay. Only available to play from 6 PM to 6 AM, Hotel 626 ensured that players had a dark and somber atmosphere to create a fully immersive experience.

RELATED: Scariest Analog Horror Series

The player had the singular goal of safely escaping Hotel 626 with their life and making it through each dangerous (and terrifying) task to accomplish that near-impossible goal. The game was well ahead of its time, utilizing the player's camera, mic, and even using the player's cell phone if a number was provided!

1 Scary Maze (The Maze)

Scary Maze Flash Game

One of the most notorious games of the Flash era was actually a cheeky prank. The classic Scary Maze (renamed that by the public after its secret was out) was typically played by unfortunate victims who didn't know what they were in for. The Scary Maze is labeled The Maze, luring players in for a genuinely fun game where players must navigate their cursor through an intricate maze.

However, towards the end of the third level, while the player is likely nose to the screen, in full concentration mode, a giant pop-up (complete with an ear-piercing scream) ends the entire game! This game may be a cheap scare but truly was one of the best games in the jumpscare era of the internet.
