ScarJo Is the 2nd Highest-Paid Marvel Star—Here’s How Much More She’s Making From ‘Black Widow’

She's making more than both of the Chrises, FYI.

It should come as no surprise that Scarlett Johansson’s net worth is massive—one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses-level massive. As Marvel fans know, ScarJo has graced our screens as one of the cinematic universe’s six Avengers since 2010, and all that experience has certainly earned her a pretty penny over the years.

Not only has Johansson emerged as the MCU’s second-highest-paid star yet; she’s also landed a record-breaking salary for her own standalone film, Black Widow. The film, which was first set for release in May 2020, was ultimately pushed back until July 2021 for a premiere on Disney+ and in theaters. Aside from Scarlett Johansson’s net worth receiving a nice boost from the first Black Widow movie, however, the film is also important as it’s introducing a new face to the MCU universe: Florence Pugh, who stars as Natasha Romanoff’s quasi protégé.

But back to Scarlett Johansson’s net worth. Based on the past salaries of other Marvel Cinematic Universe actors, such as Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth, it’s expected that ScarJo is also doing well in the financial department. That said, there was a time when some of her male counterparts—like former costar Robert Downey Jr., who plays Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—made significantly more than her. Johansson opened up about the discrepancy between her and her costars in a 2016 interview with Cosmopolitan, where she confessed that, though she’s in a “fortunate” position, the pay gap is part of a “larger problem” about gender inequality.

“There’s something icky about me having that conversation unless it applies to a greater whole. I am very fortunate,” she told Cosmo at the time. “I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage…I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general.”

Still, Scarlett Johansson‘s net worth is far from small. Read on to find out just how much she’s worth, thanks to her massive Marvel paychecks and more.

How much did Scarlett Johansson make for the Avengers movies?

How much did Scarlett Johansson make from the Avengers movies?

Marvel’s Avengers franchise follows a scaled payment structure for its talent, with actors like Johansson falling into the same category as peers Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. Back in 2015, Variety reported that the trio were likely earning up to $15 million each for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the second film in the Avengers franchise.

That said, Avengers: Endgame, which premiered in 2019 and concluded the Avengers series, rounded out the franchise as Marvel’s highest-grossing film yet (in fact, it was Hollywood’s highest-grossing film ever with more than $2 billion made). Given that actors usually earn a percentage of the box office earnings, it’s likely that Scarlett Johansson’s net worth was boosted a ton from the film’s success. It’s also possible that ScarJo made significantly more for her (spoiler alert) final appearance as Black Widow in the Avengers universe. Forbes reported in 2019 that, in addition to ScarJo’s $15 million salary for movies such as Avengers: Endgame, she and her costars also received backend pay bumps if their films were successes, which, according to the box office, every Avengers film has been.

In a 2017 interview with Marie Claire, Johansson talked about how, even though she’s been reported as one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, that doesn’t mean that she’s the highest-paid next to her male costars. “Just because I’m the top-grossing actress of all time does not mean I’m the highest paid,” she said at the time. “I’ve had to fight for everything that I have. It’s such a fickle and political industry.” As of 2021, her fellow Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. remains the highest-paid actor in the franchise.

ScarJo also told Marie Claire at the time that she spoke about her Marvel salaries to highlight the pay gap between men and women in all industries. “Some people felt I should talk about my personal struggle in order to shed a spotlight on the greater issue,” she said. “Maybe I’m being presumptuous, but I assumed it was obvious that women in all positions struggle for equality. It’s always an uphill battle and fight.”

She continued, “[I believe] that it is really important to hear people in various positions of power to voice their opinions, their story,” she said at the time. “Why not? Why can’t I have the voice? Why can’t I use my platform? What’s the point of having it if you don’t use it? If you don’t want to get involved, please, the noise is loud enough. But if you’ve got something to say, say it.”

How much did Scarlett Johansson make for Black Widow?

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, Johansson confirmed that she was finally being paid equally compared to her male co-stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, what does this mean for her Black Widow salary? Given that her co-stars Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth made an estimated $15 million for each of their recent solo films, THR reported at the time that Johansson’s base salary would also be around $15 million.

While that may not seem like much of a pay bump after a decade in the MCU, it’s actually a lot more than any of her co-star’s made for their debut standalone films. As we’ve reported before, Evans and Hemsworth received way smaller checks when their films came out in 2011. It’s reported that Hemsworth made $150,000 because of his small name in Hollywood back then, whereas Evans took home $1 million. Likewise, it’s reported that Downey Jr only made $500,000 for the first Iron Man film in 2008 because of his reputation in Hollywood at the time.

Of course, this doesn’t compare to the $50 million that Downey Jr. made for Avengers: Endgame. But it’s still important to note that $15 million is just Johansson’s base salary. The actress is primed to earn a lot more, even within the $20 million range according to THR, thanks to her production credits on the film.

What is Scarlett Johansson’s net worth?

Now for the big question: How much is ScarJo worth? According to Celebrity Net Worth, Scarlett Johansson’s net worth is a massive $165 million. That, of course, is thanks to her multi-million-dollar salaries on nine Marvel films, as well as campaigns with brands like Louis Vuitton, Moet Chandon, Dolce & Gabbana, Mango and L’Oréal. Along with her Marvel career, Johansson has also starred in blockbuster films such as The Jungle Book and Ghost in the Shell, which likely also boosted her worth. Forbes also reported in 2019 that Johansson was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid celebrities that year, with $56 million earned in 2019 alone. With two Oscar nominations in 2020 for the films Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, it’s also expected that Scarlett Johansson’s net worth will only increase because of the higher paychecks she will be able to command.
