The change of locale from New York to London has done Woody Allen a world of good. As has oft been said, Match Point is his best movie since ... fill in the blank.

His first film set in London, it boasts a young, pretty, something-for-everyone cast. As enter-tainment, however, it just slams limply into the net every time.

The plotting lacks a necessary sense of tragic propulsion; it feels dutifully schematic, its ironies polite and tidy when they should be bitter and merciless.

Woody(TM)s best for ages. Even for non-Allen fans this has all the appeal of a good story well told and capped with a deliciously vicious little twist.

Jun 09, 2013A dour and macabre film, Match Point is a monotonous suspense thriller from Woody Allen. The story follows a country club tennis instructor who marries into a wealth family, but his infidelity soon jeopardizes everything that he's worked for. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Matthew Goode, and Emily Mortimer, the performances are quite good. However, the script fails them: it doesn't maintain any suspense and the characters quickly lose their interest. Match Point is an especially weak film that lacks originality and is poorly executed.Dann M Super Reviewer

Sep 23, 2012To me, "Match Point" defines the word 'subtle.' Allen's screenplay and direction are incredibly low-key and keep the film slowly moving until it hits an explosive finale that's equal parts thriller and dark comedy. Scarlett Johansson is electrifying in her femme fatale role and Jonathan Rhys Meyers provides a solid, if understated performance. "Match Point" isn't as exciting as you might expect, and for a thriller, it takes a heck of a lot of patience to sit through, but when it gets going, boy does it get going.Stephen E Super Reviewer
