Producer Gregg Hoffman, who helped turn $1m (577,000) horror movie Saw into a $102m (58m) hit, has died aged 42.

Mr Hoffman also produced romantic comedy Only You, George of the Jungle 2 and Saw II, released in October.

He died of natural causes on Sunday in a Hollywood hospital after being admitted complaining of neck pain.

Peter Block of Saw distributor Lions Gate said Mr Hoffman worked in a "collaborative and inspiring fashion - traits all too rare in our industry".

'Driving force'

Saw tells the grisly story of a serial killer called Jigsaw who devises intricate situations to encourage his victims to kill each other.

It was inspired by an eight-minute movie which Mr Hoffman believed would be a success as a full-length feature.

"He discovered this movie, brought it in and talked us into making it," said production partner Oren Koules. "He was the driving force behind it."

Mr Hoffman was working on a second Saw sequel and the movie Crawlspace when he died.
