Gregg Hoffman, who produced the Saw horror films, has died at the age of 42.

The producer died in a Hollywood hospital on Sunday after complaining of neck pain.

Hoffman was inspired to create Saw after watching an eight-minute film which he believed would work as a full-length feature. The movie tells the story of a serial killer called Jigsaw who encourages his victims to kill each other through a number of intricate situations.

Production partner Oren Koules called Hoffman "the driving force" behind Saw. "He discovered this movie, brought it in and talked us into making it," he said.

Hoffman was working on new film Crawlspace when he died.
