I am wondering why I ever delayed reading this. I started and then just kept reading and reading. I had to remind myself to breathe. The romance is just heart wrenching. But there was humor too so it was not so heavy. I like that the love story spanned the growth of the characters from knowing each other in their youth and then growing in love with each other as they matured. It was not an easy journey. Aside from the sister of my best friend romance, theirs was also sort of like a second chance romance.

The hero grew up lonely in his grandfather’s estate. He carried emotional scars from the deaths of his parents and his grandfather’s treatment. The heroine has been forever in love with the hero since they practically grew up together. The day they met again on her come out sparks flew and flames ignited. But her being the little sister of the hero’s best friend plus the hero’s emotional issues kept the hero from fully committing and embracing their love. So the heroine took matters upon herself and sealed their fate. The hero left the heroine and a near death experience made him confront his feelings and he went home to win her back. It was really a rollercoaster ride but it had humorous moments. It was a joy to read how they secured their happy ending and how they grew and discovered an awareness of themselves. There were steamy scenes but nothing over the top graphic/erotic. I like the epilogue as well. I also appreciate how this book is a standalone. I did start the series with the story of the brother of the heroine. Reading this book made me want to reread the brother’s book so I can understand it in a different light.

I am also committing to finishing the entire series.

I read this after reading A Rogue for All Seasons (Weston Family) , which I really enjoyed. I think that in this case most of the reviews on this particular book are a bit harsh. The h has been in love with the H forever and she very immaturely goes about seducing the H so that he'll marry her. Sure she knows that he doesn't want to get married to anyone but she thinks she can save him. For heaven's sake she is only 19 and very sheltered, it's totally plausible. The H then disappears immediately after the wedding and joins the navy. The h is then left to fend for herself and ends up having a baby that the H knows nothing about. The H returns and is then remorseful. It's a cute story, with frustrating points at times but I did like the book. I've now downloaded the book after this one and look forward to reading it.

I know this came out a bit ago, but it is new to me! I was searching for authors with writing style and wit similar to Julia Quinn, and came across a forum post listing her name. Decided to purchase her first book, and was not disappointed! If I’m being nit picky, there are a few story flow kinks to work out. But I LOVE her style and characters. She is similar to Quinn, Kleypas, and MacLean, but is also uniquely her own. Great start, and promising candidate to add to my “favorite authors” list. Definitely looking forward to devouring the rest of her books!

Having heard lots of buzz about Sara Lindsey being "the next Julia Quinn," of course, I was bound to check her out. Julia Quinn is among my favorite authors for good reason; she combines humor, passion, and wit to create brilliantly entertaining romances.

While it took me a couple of weeks to work through this book, it is not the book's fault! I immediately fell in love with Isabella Weston, a spunky and determined young woman. She knows what she wants, and what she really wants is James Sheffield. And who could blame her? James is dashing, handsome, and he's always been a knight in shining armor to Isabella. When she manages to surprise him one evening with a plan to snare him into marriage, James is stunned. He wants nothing to do with Isabella as a wife...or really wants a wife at all. Instead, he's content to allow his grandfather's precious estate to die with him.

As a debut novel, this one is exceptional. I suspect that Lindsey's works will only continue to improve with time.

"Should have been called, "Promise me forever"

I have to ask....why was the book named, "Promise me tonight"
"Promise me forever" would have been more appropriate. I like this writer. The hero and heroine have very good chemistry. The hero does not show much affection towards the heroine in the beginning. However, he is redeemed early on in the story, which makes his love for the heroine believable. The story is engaging and entertaining. Love scenes are hot and saucy. I love romance stories that are based on the heroine being in love with the hero from her youth. Very well put together and a perfect ending. I plan on reading the rest of this series and more by this author.

I enjoyed the book. The only problem was I have read this book before. It was a take off of the Twilight Saga without the vampires. It had a plot line that was strangely similiar. I believe some of the dialogue was even the same. The heroine even had the same name Isabella(Izzie). I literally started laughing when she heard the voice of the hero(James) when she was giving birth to her daughter. (Bella in the Twilight Series hears Edward in New Moon when she does something dangerous.) It was Edward and Bella all over again. I hope the sequel does not turn out to be a take-off of Jane Austen's Northanger Abby.

I agree with the reviewer who mentioned that this is a plot we have seen many times. While I found this book very cliched and maybe trying a bit too hard, it was an enjoyable read and I think we will see great new books coming as the author evolves. I also thought that the build up to James and Isabella getting together was to short or the author did not do a great job of building a stronger past. Everyone in the book was just a bit too clever. I plan to see what comes next from Sara Lindsey and am very hopeful

I read a lot of regency historicals and some leave me feeling bored or like something is missing. I felt that the characters were easy to relate to, there was some good intimate scenes (although I thought there could be more), and the story was written well.

... für mich war schwer zu erkennen warum. Weder ist die Handlung des Romans sonderlich originell, noch sind die Charaktere (durchgehend) liebenswert oder in ihren Handlungsmotiven nachzuvollziehen.

Die Handlung wird von Amazon eigentlich sehr treffend wiedergegeben. Kurz zusammengefasst handelt es sich um einen "in love with her big brothers best friend" gemischt mit einer Art "marriage of convenience" plot. Ersteres finde ich wundervoll, letzteres meide ich normalerweise wie die Pest. Unglücklicherweise, war eben dieser Fortgang der Handlung den Rezensionen und Empfehlungen nicht recht zu entnehmen, sonst hätte ich mich wahrscheinlich beim Kauf zurückgehalten.

Isabel "Izzi" Weston hat James schon immer geliebt. Schon als Kind war ihr klar, dass er der Mann ist, den sie heiraten möchte. Das ändert sich auch nicht, als sie erwachsen wird und zu einer auffälligen Schönheit -äh- erblüht.
James hat einen tragischen Familienhintergrund. Beide Eltern leben nicht mehr und von seinem erziehungsberechtigten Onkel erfährt er keine Liebe. Die 'holt' er sich (sozusagen) bei seinen Nachbarn, den Westons, und freundet sich vor allem mit dem ältesten Sohn an. Soviel zur Voraussetzung der Geschichte.
Die Handlung kommt eigentlich erst so richtig in Gang als Izzi ihr Debut hat. Da James ihr als 14-Jährige versprochen hat, mit ihr auf ihrem Debutball zu tanzen, kommt James nach einigen Jahren Abwesenheit zu Izzis Ball, um das Versprechen einzulösen. Sobald sie die Treppe herunterschreitet und sozusagen ihren 'Auftritt' hat, ist James plötzlich von Izzis Schönheit überwältigt und beobachtet sie leidenschaftlich. Man könnte auch sagen, er ist sofort scharf auf sie. Dann beginnt das übliche hin und her von sie wollen sich, aber es ist nicht anständig (hinzu kommt James' Vorsatz sich nie zu verlieben, was die Sache verkompliziert- leider nicht besonders originell als Charaktermotivation) und es endet mit einer Heirat, die aufgrund einer Kompromomitierung notwendig geworden ist. Hier beginnt quasi der zweite Teil des Romans, in dem Izzi und James sozusagen ihre Probleme bekämpfen und zueinander finden.

Von Autorinnen wie Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Teresa Medeiros und Eloisa James wurde dieses Debut hochgelobt und empfohlen. Julia Quinn schreibt auf ihrer homepage sogar, sie fühle sich geehrt vom Vergleich mit ihrer 'Bridgerton-Serie'. Nun ja, an ihrer Stelle wäre ich nicht ganz so froh darüber. Der Roman kommt nicht im mindesten an "The Duke and I" (dem Auftrakt der Bridgertons) ran und keiner der Charaktere ist so liebenswert wie die Bridgertons und ihre Partner/innen. Ebenso ist der Roman -abgesehen von der zugegebenermaßen teilweise recht amüsanten Korrespondenz Izzis, die zu Beginn jedes Kapitels zitiert wird - auch nicht besonders witzig oder heiter, was ja Quinn's Markenzeichen ist.

Zusammengefasst gibt es mehrere Elemente, die diesen Roman zu einer ziemlichen Enttäuschung machen. Da wäre allen voran die Handlung, die für meinen Geschmack etwas stringenter hätte sein dürfen und vielleicht wäre hier auch weniger mehr gewesen. Zu Beginn Komödie, dann Drama und irgendwo auch noch ein bisschen Selbstfindung und Erwachsenwerden der Helden/innen waren einfach zu viel und deshalb in der Fülle nicht überzeugend.

Dann die Charaktere.
Izzy ist vor allem durch ihre Beharrlichkeit in Bezug auf James gekennzeichnet. Sie liebt ihn und will ihn, egal was er dazu sagt. Man könnte sagen, sie trickst auf ziemlich folgenreiche Weise, um ihn zu bekommen, indem sie sich seinen expliziten Wünschen, ihr nicht näherzukommen, widersetzt und eine Schwäche seinerseits ausnutzt. Anschließend verhält sie sich wie ein dummes und eigenwilliges Schaf, und begegnet seinem zugegebenermaßen ebenfalls abscheulichen Verhalten, mit Trotz und (Ver-)Schweigen.

James ist anfangs durchaus liebenswert, wenn auch ein klein wenig langweilig und ohne rechte Tiefenschärfe. Unglücklicherweise hat die Autorin sich entschieden, dass er Izzy zum erstenmal wirklich sieht, als sie als blühende Schönheit ihr gesellschaftliches Debut hat. Offenbar reicht ihr spitzenmäßiges Aussehen bereits, um ihn aus den Socken zu hauen und seine Lenden in Stimmung zu versetzen (sorry, blöde Formulierung, aber so ähnlich verläuft es tatsächlich). Vermutlich wollte die Autorin mit ihm eine Art "tortured hero" schaffen, jedoch bleibt sie dabei auf der Hälte stecken. So richtig viel Einsicht bekommen wir nicht in James' Seelenleben und dass sich ein erwachsener Mann durch den Verlust beider Eltern nahezu trotzig entschließt, nie wieder zu lieben (Verlustängste! Oje!) ist auch ziemlich lahm (nicht zu sagen abgedroschen). Izzy kann er jedoch nicht wiederstehen und sieht sich gezwungen sie zu heiraten (was er auch nie wollte. Niemanden.). An diesem Punkt der Geschichte wird seine Handlungsmotivation richtig merkwürdig und ehrlich gesagt auch ziemlich dünne. Klar Begründungen für seine anschließende Abwesenheit werden geliefert, aber ist das nicht reichlich dämlich? Und irgendwie auch auch nicht so recht stimmig?

Es gab in diesem Roman relativ viele einzelne Handlungsaspekte, die mir nicht gefallen haben, da sie zum Teil unüberzeugend und abgedroschen waren, zum Teil aber auch übereilt und einfach zu viele waren. Die Charaktere fand ich abschnittsweise sogar unerträglich, wobei mir leider Izzy noch weniger gefallen hat, als James. Insgesamt war der Roman aus meiner Sicht keinesfalls eine Empfehlung wert und ich glaube nicht, dass ich die Folgebände lesen möchte. Dennoch möchte ich dem Roman 3 Sterne geben, da es sich a) um einen Debutroman handelt und b) sich einige Aspekte in dem Roman fanden, die ich subjektiv in romances fürchterlich finde- andere sehen das sicher anders.

Dennoch halte ich das Buch nicht für einen Knaller. Was so bekannte Liebesromanautorinnen, wie die oben zitierten in ihm gesehen haben, ist mir schleierhaft.
