Overview of San Mateo County, CA

Founded in 1856, San Mateo County is located on the San Francisco Peninsula in California’s Bay Area, between the cities of San Francisco and Palo Alto. Tied to the larger Silicon Valley region, the county and its seat, Redwood City, have served as the home for tech companies like Oracle and Electronic Arts.

The county is home to dozens of parks, trails and beaches, as well as the endangered San Francisco garter snake and the San Bruno elfin butterfly. Split by the Santa Cruz Mountains, the eastern portion of the county is more densely populated, while its western half is more rural and home to protected and undeveloped land.
