Clarification needed.[edit]

A passage reads: "In September 1944 Katzman was offered a job producing serials for Columbia Pictures, starting with Brenda Starr, Reporter (1945) He followed this with the serials Jungle Raiders (1945) and Who's Guilty? (1945). With typical thrift, he produced the first one on the side, using Monogram's actors and technicians."

What does this second sentence even mean? Does "the first one" refer to "Brenda Starr, Reporter" or "Jungle Raiders"? It could be either. And then, "on the side" -- huh? My guess is that the writer is trying to say that Katzman somehow made one of these films (I don't know which) at his previous studio somehow, but it's not clear and needs further explanation, since I'm not sure how this would even be possible.
