Sam Houston State University was founded in 1879 and is named after Texas’ greatest hero, General Sam Houston. Our diverse student body is over 20,000 strong and represents 60 countries, yet we pride ourselves on creating a close community. And, with more than 230 student organizations on campus, you’ll find clubs, activities, and programs that fit your interests and allow you to explore your curiosity with others.

SHSU is located in Huntsville, Texas, a small city of 38,000 residents located between Houston and Dallas. Although only 70 miles from downtown Houston, Huntsville is surrounded by lush forests, lakes, and ranch lands.
