Rangnick confirms talks with FC Bayern
ÖFB team manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed contact with German record champions Bayern Munich. He had informed the ÖFB of this, said the 65-year-old in an interview published on Wednesday.
Rangnick explained in the conversation with the internet portal 90minuten.at, which took place in Vienna on Tuesday, that his focus is on the national team and not on a coaching job in Bavaria. "At the moment, there is no reason for me to deal with it intensively and concretely."
Rangnick is currently considered the favorite candidate at FC Bayern, which is looking for a successor to coach Thomas Tuchel. The 50-year-old must leave Munich at the end of the season after being dethroned in the championship. ÖFB sporting director Peter Schöttel told ORF that Rangnick had informed president Klaus Mitterdorfer and himself "that he has an offer from Bayern Munich, that he is thinking about it". The German feels very comfortable at the ÖFB. "On the other hand, when a club like Bayern Munich comes knocking, it's understandable that you think about an interest from this club," said Schöttel.
No concrete offer yet
According to Rangnick, he has not yet received a concrete offer. Only then would the German think intensively about a move. "At the moment when Bayern would say: We want you. And then I have to ask myself: Do I even want that?" said the coach, who emphasized that he feels very comfortable with the ÖFB and has a "very trusting relationship". "We are completely focused on the European Championship."
Rangnick left open the question of whether he would fulfill his current contract, which runs until 2026. "If I want to do something else, I will first discuss it with the ÖFB." Financial matters do not play a role, the German emphasized. "For me, it's about other things: Can I make a difference? Can I make a difference? Is there a chance to develop a team and be successful? That's what drives me. If that no longer drives me, then it's time to retire," said Rangnick, who once again explained that injured team captain David Alaba is unlikely to play in the European Championships due to a cruciate ligament rupture.
Schöttel confirmed this. "When it comes to financial aspects, he wouldn't have to think about it. That's why I'm quite optimistic that he appreciates the package we've put together in recent years and will continue with us."
