For those travelling within the next few days ….

The bad weather in Germany and Belgium is now affecting Austria as well. There are flood warnings in Salzburgerland, and severe damage in Hallein. In Salzburg, the high water level is expected to be at about midday on Sunday, but already rail services around Golling are disrupted.

Vienna, especially the Mödling area has issued flood warnings, and the bathing area on the Alte Donau has been closed as it is regarded as too dangerous for swimmers.

Now even the Weather Gods are turning against us !

watching webcams and also accuweather, as far as i can see, the area around salzburg is not, and wont be affected. clouds are breaking and forecast is reasonable. a few thunder storms maybe in both salzburg and vienna.

by the way, last nights sky news said that the uk was suffering too....is that correct? here in ireland, unusually, we are basking in the high 20s and will be all week

Try the Kurier website Nak. http://www.kurier.at … they are continually updating and the Salzach is running very high in Salzburg ! Damage in Hallein is quite shocking, perhaps not as bad as Nordrhein Westphalia, and no deaths or injuries reported, but I feel very sorry for the local residents.

thanks for the link. it seems as if it is the mountainous areas which are getting the worst rain and these are causing rivers to flood. i wonder what the situation is in hallstatt which had floods a few years back?

i can see my property on webcams and there is a stream beside it. it is not showing any excess water at present, but it is quite a short stream. but i am on top floor, so i wont get flooded !

i also remember the floods that affected levels in the likes of traunsee where large craft ended up in the square outside the rathaus!

i will be keeping a better eye out now. we wereto go over on 16 aug, but flight schedules messed us up and so will not be over until 1 sept. hopefully the rain will have stopped by then !

nak the only weather alerts in the UK in recent days have been for heat/sun. No flooding that I’m aware of though heat can bring localised thunderstorms.

Unfortunately, such extreme events occur every few years, which is why we shouldn't be too surprised about it happening again. Although I am really surprised about the situation and the death toll in Germany!

Even though flooding protection was realized or improved in many endangered parts of the country, where it was possible, it is still impossible to tame all waters, especially those in mountainous areas.

Large cities like Vienna have a reliable flooding protection, which prevents harm from the mighty Danube River, even under extreme conditions, but there are also localized floodings in the city, mainly affecting subsurface facilities (e.g. garages, underpasses etc).

We can only hope that it will be over soon....

norman. sky were obviously way off the mark. they showed the east of uk and scotland highlighted as well as belgium, holland and germany. but of course, sky is not the most reliable ! anyway, the projected weather maps of europe are showing rain has moved further east to hungary. mind you, it can take some time for the water from the mountains to ease off. i havent heard of any deaths in austria as yet

We are due to arrive in Vienna in 2 weeks. Is there any website you can reccomend that is reliable for checking local weather?

i use accuweather, but the official austrian weather office is...ZAMG. but nobody would be able to accurately forecast more than 5 days ahead.
