St Peter Stiftskulinarium 803 AD History, gastronomy, culture and civilised social life come together in the elegant surroundings of the St Peter Stiftskulinarium, the best address in Salzburg, Mozart's sublime home city. Inside the walls of a Benedictine abbey at the heart of Salzburg's colourful Old Town, the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium has been a popular meeting place for princes and bishops, citizens and merchants for more than a millennium. A documented visit by Charlemagne in 803 is its claim to be Europe's oldest hostelry. More than a restaurant, the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium remains Salzburg's rendez-vous of choice - a place for good eating and drinking, of course, but also for entertaining,

The service was lovely and the food delicious. We were on a very tight schedule because we were meeting a tour, and the restaurant accommodated the six of us, which meant we could have a delicious lunch, prepared to order because we made our selections...ahead of time. That left more time for visiting with one another and having a second glass of wine!More

My partner and I visited the restaurant at the beginning of August 2020. We booked a table in the garden over the phone, from abroad, two days before the planned dinner. On the day of dinner, we wanted to confirm ourselves once in person at...the restaurant. Reservation were not found, so restaurant staff re-recorded the reservation. In the evening, on our arrival at dinner, reservation, new or old, was not found again. With the excuse that a reservation was needed several weeks in advance (despite the fact that certain tables were empty throughout the evening), the employees wanted to escort us out of the restaurant. After a few minutes of arguing, they found a table inside the restaurant where we didn’t want to sit down (due to a prior double reservation in the garden). After some more arguing again and moving the other guests, we finally just got our own table in the garden. Menu, very modern, fresh, suitable for summer. The dishes are perfectly prepared and extremely tasty. Their service, a little less so. Waiters often made mistakes when serving dishes and bring the wrongly ordered or superficially ordered. Quite a few times our table was also on the way, the drink was popping, the food was overturning. I would suggest the restaurant, due to experience - the oldest restaurant in which, among others, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Christopher Columbus were served. The restaurant is historic with a modern twist. Prices are also comparable to the prices of other restaurants around Salzburg.More

We booked a table for the performance and dinner. The hostess who took our tickets on arrival was delightful with a great sense of humour. The food was average and the staff struggled to keep up with orders and tables. With that said, the venue...is absolutely beautiful and the performance was 5-star. We shared a table with a lovely couple whose company made the evening even better. At the end, during dessert service, we asked if we could have coffee to accompany the dish and we were told that we had to go downstairs for that. At 66,00 € per person, I would like to think that coffee could at least be brought upstairs for us. Apart from that, it was a lovely evening.More

My wife and I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. We were drawn in by the decor and the amount of people visiting. When we walked in were were amazed by the interior and were delighted to find that there was a table available...but that was where the enjoyment stopped. I ordered the schnitzel and my wife ordered the boiled beef. The schnitzel was remarkably average and certainly not worth 26 Euros and my wife's meal was incredibly bland and boring. The staff must have noticed how unimpressed we were with the food as they were noticeably avoiding us from then on. After sitting for a long time waiting for our bill we had to ask another waiter to give us our bill, he initially said he couldn't but when he saw how irritated we were be obliged. 100 Euros later we left feeling like we had been cheated and wished that we had simply gotten a sausage at the Christmas market as the quality of our food would have been better and the service would likely have been superior.More

Before going further: The service was good. Our waitress was attentive, spoke good English. The management checked in on us and that was appreciated. No issues with the service at all. The layout of the restaurant is also very nice, we sat in the sheltered...section with a view of the courtyard. It had all the hallmarks of a really nice dining experience. The first problem though, was the music. Why a restaurant purporting to be high end should feel a DJ is a good idea is beyond me. As it turned out our "DJ" was a middle aged guy wearing cargo trousers and sneakers who thought it was a good idea to blast classical music at a volume too much for the speakers to handle, let alone the patrons. Insultingly enough the music wasn't even Mozart. In-between these tracks he'd put the volume down and have the music playing from a playlist leaving me to question his very existence. It was distracting and unnecessary and cheapened the atmostphere. The second problem was the poorly translated menu. As an English native in a non-English speaking country I don't expect an English menu, but I'm happy to receive one. The poulard meal mentioned "knuckles" which we found odd for a bird, but which the waitress clarified to mean "spatzl" noodles. Okay... The food itself was beyond disappointing, especially given the price. My €27 bowl of truffle pasta was so dominated by parmesan cheese that the salty taste rendered whatever truffle was actually in there totally beyond recognition by my taste buds. Our starters consisted of a goats cheese salad, with cheese that had no taste at all, and a truffle soup of sorts. We knew from the poorly translated menu that this truffle thing came with an egg but we weren't expecting a raw egg inside of a bowl of soup. At best a raw yolk, but a whole egg? We weren't sure if this was some kind of haute cuisine attempt or just a mistake. When we pointed it out to the waitress she said the egg was cooked but she could see by the gooey egg white dripping off the spoon that this was not the case. She offered to replace the dish. When she returned it was obvious that the egg had been removed and the dish heated up further, which reduced the volume of the soup and left a tell-tale ring of residue around the inside of the bowl. We were so disappointed by the whole thing that we were close to warning another couple who arrived to sit at the table next to us and we left without even contemplating dessert. A great opportunity ruined by misplaced pretensions and what seems to be simply poor cooking. Perhaps if the chef spent less time socialising with the people at a table nearby and more time in the kitchen this wouldn't have happened. We'll never find out.More

Supposedly the oldest restaurant in Europe founded in 803ad. Don’t be drawn in by this! We went for the Christmas dinner, along with hundreds of others (most of whom spent the night queuing in the corridors for some reason). The food was pretentious, expensive and...badly served. The wine list has a mark up of about 400%. After 3-4 hours of eating mostly bread rolls and listening to Americans complain about the food and the service, we started to see the joke! This place has been taking the mickey out of tourists for nearly 1300 years! Why stop now?More

This was my second visit to St. Peter’s Stiftkeller. The service was exceptional once again. We wanted a three course meal but hadn’t called ahead except to make reservations for a party of seven. The staff graciously offered us a great three course lunch for...a reasonable price. I loved this. No fuss, just great customer service! The food was excellent, portions large and tasty. The decor is warm and inviting. It was a very positive experience and I’d recommend it if you’re visiting Salzburg. It’s the oldest restaurant in Europe and still going strong. They are obviously doing something right. For centuries.More

Came here for new years eve, which we did enjoy but there are a few things travellers should know: 1) The restaurant is (very) stretched on this night and staff are overwhelmed. We received a very cold welcome from the staff who were very stressed...with their work that night. It also took more than half an hour for us to have someone come over with water. Later on, in the evening, this did improve 2) The dining rooms do not have music. You need to book a very specific option for music, which is not clear at all in the booking process. You will read about music in other reviews, so please double check all the small details with the restaurants 3) The booking experience is a pain. You can leave a request for a booking and they only confirm it to you a few days before the night. This is not ideal for those who travel half way around the world. Overall, the meal was nice and the venue is pretty. I would recommend this place happily on a normal evening; though NOT on new years eve.More

The tiny "Fine dining" section is a small busy walk through to another room where "traditional" dining is being served creating a hectic stressful atmosphere, not helped by the waitress audibly sighing loudly as she passed us on several occasions. The food was dire.. we...had the full 7 course menu.. quite simply the worst food at this price point we've ever experienced. The bisque of one course was so salty grains of salt crunched on the teeth - we left it and told the waiter but didn't even get an apology. It overshadowed the remaining four courses with another (sweet breads) also over salty.. To be clear we normally like more salt than most so trust us, this was just appalling cheffing. The ‘’clafoutis” was anything but… How a slice of what tasted like shop-bought sponge, with cream cheese piped on top can be described as clafoutis is frankly insulting. The sommelier although friendly lost interest when we ordered a bottle of Champagne. Fine dining here is a huge tourist trap which you can guess by the tiny number of tables and location as described above.. clearly no locals would ever dine here. Come to St Peter’s for the traditional dining or Mozart dinner but avoid “fine dining” at all cost.More

It is a lovely space--checks off all the boxes you would expect. And, mind you, it is no small space either but rooms are broken up to make it feel intimate. While some reviews harped on certain dishes, we did not find any problems but...certainly stuck with the classics (why order risotto in Salzburg?). Fantastic wine list and attentive staff as well. If going at Christmas time, do not skip this restaurant.More

This was our 42 time in Europe and we were celebrating our 46 wedding anniversary in this trip. The restaurant is beautiful and the site holds many historical chronicles. I have a degree in architecture , I was able to express my designs succesfully in...Miami. This is why the restaurant called my attention. Sadly they depend on being a tourist trap . It started with waiter bringing the wrong bottle of wine and before I knew the bottle was open, after I called his attention he said it is the same price , I replied the same price but half a bottle instead of a full bottle. The food was taking a long time and I ask the waiter about our food in less than two minute they brought the food it must have been seating in the kitchen for a while, my risotto was cold and lacked taste my wife meal with truffle came as a sea food linguine, my wife does not like seafood , they wanted to bring the correct order in two minutes and I said I came here to eat with my wife together at the same time it has taken more than 60 minutes to receive a cold risotto and a dish my wife did not order We paid 94 euros for the wine , water and left. The restaurant has enormous potential it is a shame that it is a tourist trap. They ruin a very precious moment.More

This place is storied beyond belief and still blew me away with its charm, modern decor, ambiance, and menu. You walk in and you see stonework thousands of years old as the backdrop for modern art and chairs draped with feather tops and purple lights...leading your way. There’s a DJ booth and fantastic live music setting the mood for your meal. The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly, the menu small but offers 4-7 courses depending on your appetite and what you want to enjoy. There’s actually two restaurants here we at off the 803 menu but there’s another one if that’s what you want too. More affordable with more options. The cocktails were phenomenal, the plates stunning to look at and eat. The kitchen throws you a bunch off of menu little surprises and palate cleansers. I cannot recommend this spot enough and you cannot leave Salzburg without eating here.More
