Where And What To Eat In Salzburg, Austria

My first trip to Salzburg, Austria, was terrific. There’s no denying how stunning this part of the country is. But, one thing I was surprised by was how much I LOVED the food in Austria. So, I compiled a list of some of my favorite foods and restaurants to try. Hopefully, this will help you find where and what to eat in Salzburg when planning your trip in the future.

What To Eat In Salzburg

Austrian food quickly became one of my favorite things to eat once I got here. It’s pretty simple food but packs a lot of great flavors. I ended up eating out almost every night because I enjoyed the food so much. So, here are just a few things to try when visiting Austria.

Vienna Sausage – Traditionally made from pork and beef. These sausages aren’t the little cocktail wienies you can find in a can at the supermarket. But, these are 100% full-length sausages. I tried a curry sausage from a street cart, cut into medallions, and served with a sauce and curry powder. I was tempted to have a second when I finished.

Pretzels – Another excellent street food is an Austrian pretzel. These things are huge, soft, and warm. I would eat several of these on my visit as a snack to hold me over till my next meal.

Wiener Schnitzel – Traditionally made of veal, pounded flat, and breaded, quickly became a new favorite food of mine. Mine came with a traditional potato salad and cranberry sauce. These things are HUGE. But it didn’t stop me from eating the whole thing.

Ofenfrisches Schweinsbrat’l – This is roasted pork served in a dark beer sauce. It was paired with dumplings and cabbage when I tried it at Paul Stubm. Another gigantic meal, but it was so good I didn’t let any go to waste.

Strudel – And we can’t forget about dessert. Don’t forget to try a traditional apple strudel after your meal. This flaky pastry is often thought to be a German dish, but strudel actually is said to originate in Austria. They even have a recipe that dates back to 1697 in the Vienna Town Hall.

Where To Eat In Salzburg

There are many terrific restaurants in Salzburg, so there is a lot to choose from. So here are just a few great places to eat when visiting this glorious city. You won’t regret sitting down and craving your appetite at these iconic restaurants.

Paul Stubm – This was hands down my favorite place to eat. I actually had dinner here three nights in a row. The traditional Austrian food menu was to die for, and it has a great little outdoor patio. Perhaps one of the things most fun about this place is all the waiters wear traditional Austrian lederhosen.

University Square – This square is open Monday-Saturday and is filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, vendors selling their homemade products, and food stands. This is where you can get a pretzel and sausage and grab a seat on the stairs and watch the crowd go by.

Augustiner Brau – This outdoor beer garden serves so much more than beer. So if you’re not a beer lover, you can enjoy roasted meat that they roast right out on the patio. Even if you don’t want to sit, you’re more than welcome to take it with you and eat in a nearby park.

St. Peter Stiftskulinarium – While I didn’t actually eat here, this is the oldest restaurant in Europe, dating back to 803 AD. It’s a little on the pricey side, but if you are into fine dining, this is definitely a place you will want to check out.

Panorama Restaurant – Want to dine with one of the best views of Salzburg? The Panorama Restaurant is located in the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This eatery serves both traditional Austrian and international food. Even if you want to sit and have a quick coffee, you can take a seat here overlooking this grand city.

Tipping In Austria

Tipping is customary in Austria, usually 10%. But, make sure to check your bill first to make sure they haven’t already included it in the bill’s price. However, this is rare in Austria. If you can leave cash if paying by card, this is best. But, if you don’t have any money on you, you can ask your server to add a couple of extra Euros to your charge. But don’t just leave a tip on the table, be sure to hand it to your server directly.
