Overall, walking to Hohensalzburg Fortress offers a delightful blend of exercise, sightseeing, and cultural immersion; but a funicular railway to the fortress is available for a fee. The fortress was built to protect the prince archbishops and the principality itself from attack. Actually, the prince archbishops never faced any danger, and most of the time they lived in the palace in the heart of Salzburg, known as the ‘Residenz’. The Fortress Church, situated within the walls of Hohensalzburg Fortress, is dedicated to St. George and was most recently reconstructed in 1502.

Schloss MIrabell (Mirabell Palace) and its gardens are an UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in 1608 for the Prince Archbishop and his mistress so that he could avoid walking through downtown because he had some health problems. It was originally named Schloss Altenau; but later renamed Schloss Mirabell, taking its name from the Italian word for beautiful. The garden was featured in The Sound of Music.

Fabulous views from the top of Untersberg... although quite slippy underfoot. We took advice of other reviewers and picked up no 5 bus ... last stop is the cable car station. The cable car is packed but very smooth. A must if you are in Salzburg. Cable cars go every 30 minutes .. on the hour and half hour.

A lovely church in Salzburg, by no means the most ornate church that we’ve visited, but still very beautiful. We attended the organ concert at noon and it was well worth our time. The beautiful old organs sounded great. Definitely get tickets for the 30 minute organ concert when visiting.

The water games are unique. Loved them. Take care of your mobile phone (you will get -though not soaking- wet) )and go for the water experience.

The lower part is accessible and doable for anyone. If you want to climb up, take your most comfy hikinh shoes/boots and equip yourself with water and be ready for quite a steep climb.

Long queues but brilliant place, lots to entertain young children, especially if it is a wet day. Would definitely recommend.

An amazing visit with Max as an excellent guide. Wrap up warm as it’s obviously cold but lots of steps take you a mile inside. High recommended.
Also worth treating yourself to coffee and strudel at the top of the gondola. Best coffee we’ve had on our travels was here!

We took the bus, easy to get there and buses were very frequent, clean and inexpensive. Great audio tour and the water features were wonderful to watch. We got there at 10.30am and it wasn't too busy. If you want to get soaked you can, but for most you get a tiny spray of water on you. Took advantage of it being such a nice day to wander around the gardens and to view the pavilion from The Sound of Music and had a cooling drink in the cafe. We didn't bother going into the Schloss as our main purpose of visiting was to view the water features. I would strongly recommend.

Easy to find cemetary next to the funicular station. Lovely to wander around the graves, sadly I was there New Year's Day so the catacombs were closed but it's well worth a visit.
