"I've tried hard to work a lot, and I've been trying more in the last few years than I have in the past," he told the publication.

"Having this many opportunities comes from a confluence of things but a lot of goodwill that I've already put into my career and is coming as payback now."

So what has this Hollywood actor's career looked like and how has he continued to make waves in his industry?

Mulroney auditioned for three months before landing the role of the male lead in his debut in the 1986 film, Sin of Innocence.

"Then I took off like lightning. Once I got signed, I thought: 'I'm really going to do this, and I'm going to do it forever – I'm going to make sure I don't blow it'" the actor told The Guardian.

This was the starting point for a long-standing career which would later see him earning Best Actor at the 1992 Seattle International Film Festival, just four years later.

He worked on two collaborations with River Phoenix before his death; The early naughties were spent working on western films, Young Girls, The Last Outlaw and Silent Tongues.

"Well, I had some alcoholism. That slowed me down," he explained to The Guardian. "We were all drinking voraciously in a way that I don't think young actors do today. I think that took on some legendary status."

Mulroney continued, saying his drinking only became problematic on the sets of his films, four times, saying acting is a "nail-biting business, that's what I mean. Every performer is in a state of stress even when they make it look easy."

26 years after arguably one of his biggest films, the movie My Best Friend's Wedding has stood the test of time, with co-star Julia Roberts recently revealing she would be open to a sequel.

When asked on Watch What Happens Live if there was one film from her career that she'd like to see given a potential sequel, the actress revealed: "I think, maybe, My Best Friend's Wedding," Roberts said of the rom-com. "Because there's so many people in it, and to see what they're doing."

His acting career continued to flow with films The Wedding Date, Abduction, Christmas classic The Family Stone and he even featured in Friends and New Girl.

In 2008, he married Italian Tharita Cesaroni, exchanging vowels in a private ceremony attended by only family and friends. The couple share daughters Mabel Ray and Sally Mulroney.

His career has spanned over 30 years, throughout most of which he has refused to cover a scar on his lip that came from an accident when he was three years old.

"It was a long time ago, so I've always had it," Mulroney told Chicago's Splash magazine.

"I was three-and-a-half, and I was carrying a dish for our pet rabbits. And I tripped and it broke, and I fell on it. I definitely remember that day, even though I was three-years-old.

"I don't think about it or see it, but it's always been there. It certainly has its place on my face, right below my right nostril. That's where it belongs."

This year saw Mulroney returning to the big screen in the sixth instalment of the Scream franchise, where he played both in front of and behind the coveted ghost face mask.

"Since I have such respect for The View, a news program with a heart, it was there that I felt comfortable enough to draw attention to the ongoing WGA strike for fair wages and working hours, as I find it incredibly important to continue to support the union," the actor told Variety.

His latest projects, The Dirty SouthRuthless and Anyone But You are on their way to cinemas at the end of this year.
