Softball Splits 2024 Finale with Salem

Salem, W. Va. - The 2024 season ended for the Wheeling University Softball team (10-44, 4-24) as they made the trip to Salem, West Virginia. They would end up splitting their final doubleheader of the season, getting to double digit wins for the first time since the 2022 season, and picked up a win in the regular season finale. The Cardinals would drop a one-run game in game one, falling to Salem 4-3, and followed that up with a 6-4 win in game two to close out the season.

Game One: Salem 4, Wheeling 3

The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel as Ryleigh Peters once again took the circle for the Cardinals. After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, Peters would settle in, throwing up five straight zeros to get the team into the bottom of the sixth. On the other side, the Cardinals were retired 1-2-3 in the first, but battled the rest of the night as they had at least one runner on in four of the first six innings. Katie Sare would be the first base runner of the day in the top of the second, and two innings later the Cardinals would get their first hit on a Maria Clark single. The Cardinals would get two on in that top of the fourth, but failed to push a run across as the sore sat at 1-0 in favor of Salem.

The Cardinals would break through in the top of the sixth after Chyla Miller started the inning with a single. Anna Florczak would replace her after a fielder's choice and Cassie Feyh would reach on an error to put two on with one out. All three Cardinal runs in the inning would come on one swing as Maria Clark stepped in and smacked her first collegiate home run to give Wheeling a 3-1 lead. They would hold that lead into the bottom of the seventh, but a three-spot by the Tigers would end the game as they picked up a 4-3 walk-off victory. It would end Peter's day as she threw her 17th complete game of the season, going 6.2 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits while walking a batter.
Maria Clark would lead the way for the Cardinals, going 2-3 with a run scored, a home run, and three RBI to lead the way. It was the first collegiate home run for Clark as she gave the Cardinals a late lead. Maddie Munoz, Chyla Miller, and Katie Sare would all pick up hits to round out the day as the Cardinals looked to finish things strong in game two.

Game Two: Wheeling 6, Salem 4

After losing the lead late in game one, the Cardinal's offense would get things going early in game two. Maddie Munoz would walk to start the top of the first and Chyla Miller would reach on a throwing error the very next batter. The overthrow would allow Munoz to score from first and Miller to advance to third and the Cardinals would take a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, a fielder's choice would bring home Miller on an errant throw and the Cardinals were ahead 2-0 after half an inning without the courtesy of a hit. Salem would get a run back in the bottom of the second, but after two innings of play, the Cardinals were still staked to their 2-1 advantage.

The Cardinals would look for some insurance and got just that in the top of the third. Chyla Miller would reach on a one-out single and Anna Florczak would follow with a single of her own to put two on with one out. Cassie Feyh would follow with a third straight single and the Cardinals pushed their lead to 3-1. A fielder's choice and an error would load the bases and Madison Kay would step up and bring home another run with a single that had the Cardinals on top 4-1 after two and a half innings. They would get their final two runs in the top of the fourth as Feyh added two more runs with a single and the Cardinals led 6-1 heading into the top of the fourth.

Jamie Anderson would get the ball for the Cardinals in her final collegiate game, and made the most of the opportunity. After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, she put up back-to-back zeros in the second and third, before giving way in the bottom of the fourth. She ended up throwing 4.1 innings allowing four runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out four. Ryleigh Peters would come in to round out the day, throwing the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out one. It was enough to keep the Cardinals in front for good as they rounded out the 2024 season with a 6-4 win, giving them momentum heading into the off-season.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior Cassie Feyh, who finished her collegiate career 2-4 with four RBI on the day. It was a season-high effort for the senior as she rounded out her collegiate career on a high note. Chyla Miller added a 2-4 day with three runs scored and an RBI, while Madison Kay added the final RBI, going 1-4.

The Wheeling University Softball team now heads into the off-season as they look to continue growing and comeback stronger in 2025.
