Where is St Petersburg?

St Petersburg is located in the northern part of Russia. The city lies at the delta of the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland. St Petersburg is 400 miles or 640 km away from Moscow, the capital of Russia.

The city area is 605.8 square kilometers. With municipal towns and settlements (major of which are Kolpino, Krasnoye Selo, Kronstadt, Lomonosov, Pavlovsk, Petergof, Pushkin, Sestroretsk, Zelenogorsk), the area is 1,440 square kilometers.

St Petersburg’s elevations range from the sea level to 175.9 m, which is the highest point. In the past, the city suffered greatly from various floods. The most dangerous floods happened in 1824, 1924, 1955 and 1975.

Due to St Petersburg’s location, the day length varies greatly. The period between mid-May and mid-July is often called the White Nights. Tourists from Russia and abroad like to visit the second largest city of Russia especially during this period.
