On bank holiday weekends one thing is guaranteed - you’ll light the barbecue and then discover you’ve forgotten something crucial - like the sausages. This weekend is early spring bank holiday on May 6.

Knowing when your local supermarket is going to be open is crucial for thost last minute emergency buys. It’s set to be nice weather this weekend too - in patches at least. The Met Office has said that by Saturday temperatures are on an upward trend with maximums being above average for the start of May.

However, any big outdoor family gatherings might be forced to dodge somewhat stormy conditions with unsettled weather predicted - even some thunder and hailstorms. It said: “A fairly uncertain period through the bank holiday weekend with more likely a warm but cloudy period with bright spells, greatest in the north and showers more likely in the south.

“However there is also potential for a more unsettled spell to spread from the west with fresh winds and bands of rain mid-weekend, signals still unclear regards this. Temperatures should remain close to or a little above normal for early May.”
