Football coaches and medical center leaders earn the most pay in California state government, according to data from the State Controller's Office.

The database below allows readers to search the state's payroll records from 2014 to find base salary, overtime pay, other pay, and total overall salary data for each public employee. There's also a chart showing California highest-paid public workers.

Search the database by entering an employee's last name and then first name before clicking "submit." You also can search by department or by selecting a pay range; narrow the results even further by selecting a combination of all three search criteria.
