Two Saatva mattresses – the Saatva Classic and the Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress – earned spots in our Best Mattresses rating. The Saatva Classic comes in at No. 1, and the Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress places at No. 2. We found both these mattresses to have a medium-firm to firm feel.
Saatva has been around since 2010, and it was one of the first direct-to-consumer online mattress companies that didn’t send mattresses rolled and compressed in a box. Additionally, the company includes free white glove delivery with each mattress purchase, meaning couriers will deliver the mattress to your home and set it up.

The Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We tried the Luxury Firm (or medium-firm) model and give it a 7 to 8 out of 10 in terms of firmness, though Saatva describes it as a 5 to 7. The firmness may be due to the extra set of coils in the mattress, but it’s also worth noting that it may feel softer to heavier people.

There are two heights to choose from: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. With both, a 3-inch Euro top sits on top of a high-density memory foam lumbar support layer. Next, there’s a layer of pocketed coils and a base layer of tempered steel coils to reduce sagging.
According to the brand, both heights deliver the same performance, which means that the right height choice for you comes down to personal preference.
USN&WR
The Classic comes in two different height options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. This is the 11.5-inch version.
Innerspring mattresses like the Saatva Classic typically transfer more motion than memory foam mattresses, which absorb movement more effectively. Motion transfer can be an issue if you sleep with a partner or are easily awakened by any movement in the bed – if a bed doesn’t isolate motion well, you may feel some “bounce” when a co-sleeper is changing positions.
As expected, our crew described the Saatva Classic as bouncy, with one average-weight tester comparing it to gelatin because it wobbles and shifts only on the top while the bottom feels like it’s staying in place. Our large-and-tall tester said he felt like he was moving too much on the surface of the mattress when changing positions.
USN&WR
Our sleep expert was jostled by her sleep partner’s movements on the Saatva Classic.
While spring mattresses tend to fall short in terms of motion isolation, they have exceptional edge support due to reinforcement from the coils. This helps you get into and out of the bed more easily.
Our lightweight and average-weight testers described the edge support as “very good,” while our heavyweight tester said it was “okay.” All in all, the Saatva Classic performed well in edge support testing.
USN&WR
We found the Saatva Classic offered strong edge support.
The Saatva Classic isn’t marketed as a cooling mattress per se, but spring-based mattresses tend to promote better airflow than all-foam models, meaning they don’t trap as much heat. Our in-person testing also confirmed this.
We noticed the mattress felt cool to the touch when first lying down and started to feel slightly warm after five to 10 minutes of lying on it. Your bedding also plays a role in how hot (or cooling) a mattress is, so while the Saatva Classic doesn’t trap heat, you can make your bed more breathable with percale or cotton sheets.
USN&WR
Our sleep expert felt as if she were sleeping on top of rather than in the mattress, which can help you sleep cooler.
The Saatva Classic is fairly firm and not overly pressure-relieving, giving more of a “sleeping on top” rather than a “sinking in” feeling. The medium-firm model didn’t allow for the shoulders and hips to properly sink in when side-sleeping, so our lightweight tester’s shoulders felt pinched. The same tester felt a slight strain on her neck while resting on her stomach. However, this didn’t happen when she lay on her back. It’s worth noting that Saatva makes a Plush Soft Classic model, so you can opt for that one if you want a mattress with a plusher feel.

A queen-size Saatva Classic mattress costs $1,995. Both the 11.5- and 14.5-inch versions are the same price, as are the different firmness levels. Each mattress comes with free white glove delivery and setup – the delivery crew will set the mattress up in the room of your choice and take away an old mattress and foundation for no additional cost if you select that option at checkout. This included perk can cost an extra $100 to $200 at other mattress companies (if it’s even offered).
The Saatva Classic features a coil-on-coil design, featuring two separate layers of coils stacked on top of one another. The coils in the lower layer are made from tempered steel to prevent sagging and extend durability, and they are foam-encased around the perimeter to give the edges of the mattress a supportive feel.
Above this base layer is another layer of coils made from recycled steel. Each coil in this layer is individually wrapped to help the coils respond independently to your body weight and movements for contouring and support.
There is a thin layer of memory foam between the top layer of coils and the top of the mattress, which is a quilted Euro pillow top measuring 3 inches tall. It’s made from cotton to add breathability and cushioning.
USN&WR
The Classic mattress is made with two layers of coils, as well as memory foam and organic cotton.

The construction and materials of a mattress largely contribute to how the mattress feels, but this is partly subjective, too. Feel can come down to personal preference and perception, as well as your body type. For example, mattresses tend to feel firmer to lightweight sleepers (less than 130 pounds) than they do to heavyweight sleepers (more than 230 pounds). Because of this, we had testers that fall into each of the three weight categories try the Saatva Classic and describe how it feels to them.
Lightweight Sleepers (less than 130 pounds)
Saatva describes the Luxury Firm version of this mattress as a 5 to 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but our petite tester said it felt firmer to her (a 7 to 8 out of 10). She tried it in all sleeping positions and thought it felt firmest when sleeping on her side. There was some strain in her neck and shoulders, and she said she felt “crunched.” She didn’t feel any strain when sleeping on her back, though. If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, you may want to opt for the soft version (Saatva calls it “Plush Soft”), which is rated a 3 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)
Our average-weight tester noted that the mattress felt a little too firm for his liking on his side and stomach (which is partly a personal preference), but he had positive feedback otherwise. He said it delivered “very good” edge support and that it was easy to change positions while on this bed. However, it did shift around a bit and wasn’t the best at isolating motion – our lightweight tester said she could feel him moving around when he did change positions, but that’s to be expected of a spring-based mattress. The trade-off is better airflow, and our average-weight tester said he felt a slight cooling when he got on the mattress.
Heavyweight Sleepers (more than 230 pounds)
Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds typically need more supportive base layers. Since the Saatva Classic has two layers of coils, it provides more support than an all-foam mattress. That being said, our heavyweight tester did sink a little into the mattress. He described the edge support as “okay” and said that it wasn’t terrific. Aside from that, he thought the mattress supported his body well in all sleeping positions, and he didn’t have any complaints about the bed’s feel or pressure-relieving ability. Overall, this mattress would be a good fit for heavyweight sleepers who don’t need extra help getting into and out of bed.

The WinkBed
Both the Saatva Classic and the Saatva Zenhaven Latex mattresses are luxury models that are made with premium materials, but they’re vastly different in many other respects.
The Classic is a true innerspring with a coil-on-coil design and a thin layer of memory foam. The Zenhaven is an all-natural mattress with four latex layers, two wool layers, and an organic cotton cover.
They’re both similar in terms of motion transfer – neither latex nor springs are especially good at isolating motion – but during our testing, we found that the Zenhaven sleeps slightly cooler. The Saatva Classic doesn’t trap heat like memory foam can, but it did heat up during testing, while the Zenhaven stayed cool.
The Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels, while the Zenhaven is flippable with a Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm side.
Overall, the Saatva Classic is a better fit for shoppers on a tighter budget who don’t get too hot at night. The Zenhaven is better for those who like the body-contouring (but responsive) feel of latex and don’t mind the higher price.

The Birch Natural
The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress, while the WinkBed is a hybrid model. Both mattresses have a coil base, but the WinkBed has more foam layers.
Like the Classic, the WinkBed comes in three firmness levels – Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer – but it also has a “Plus” option that’s the firmest of them all and specifically designed for heavier sleepers.
Our lightweight tester said the Winkbed in Luxury Firm doesn’t feel as bouncy as the Classic, and it’s very easy to change positions and move around. It’s also comfortable when back sleeping but felt too firm for side sleeping and wasn’t supportive enough for stomach sleeping.
Our lightweight sleeper thought the medium-firm WinkBed was a little too firm for her liking. She had similar thoughts about the Classic for side sleeping. Overall, the WinkBed may be a better option for couples and those looking for more motion isolation, while the Classic is a fit for anyone who wants a bouncier mattress.

The Zenhaven is a flippable mattress, so the firmness depends on which side you’re sleeping on. Saatva rates one side a 4 to 5 out of 10, or Luxury Plush (medium-soft), and the other side a 7 to 8 out of 10, or Gentle Firm.
We think the Gentle Firm side of the mattress feels like a firm mattress. (We estimated it as around an 8 out of 10.)

Unlike the Saatva Classic, there’s only one height option available for this mattress: 10 inches, which is within standard dimensions but on the thinner side. There are six main layers: two layers of temperature-regulating wool and four layers of natural latex.
USN&WR
The Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress is 10 inches high.
Motion transfer describes movement from one side of the bed to the other. It’s especially important for those who sleep with a partner – if a mattress doesn’t isolate motion well, you’re more likely to get jostled awake if your partner moves throughout the night.
In general, latex is more responsive than memory foam, so latex mattresses tend to be bouncier than traditional foam models. In our tests, we noticed the Zenhaven was distinctively bouncy and we could feel movement but the motion transfer wasn't too bad. It was most noticeable when a partner was getting into and out of the bed.
USN&WR
Edge support is the amount of support a mattress has around its perimeter. Better edge support makes it easier to get into and out of bed and can prevent the mattress from sinking too much if you sleep near the edge.
Because the Zenhaven doesn’t have a coil support system, it likely won’t have as much edge support as an innerspring mattress, like the Saatva Classic.
USN&WR
Our tester found the Zenhaven to have decent edge support.
One of the downsides of memory foam is that it tends to trap heat, but latex is more temperature-neutral. The latex in this mattress specifically also has vented airflow channels that contribute to this mattress’s cooling capabilities. These channels allow for better air circulation and breathability.
In our tests, the Saatva Zenhaven regulated temperature well and stayed cool without any heat-trapping or overheating.
USN&WR
The Zenhaven features ventilated latex to help you sleep cool.
Latex mattresses are known for offering superior pressure relief, especially when compared to regular polyurethane foams. They contour your body without too much sinking and are more responsive so they can quickly adapt as you change positions. Another tester, an average-weight sleeper, said he felt especially supported and comfortable when lying on his back.

A queen-size Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress costs $3,295. Because it’s made with premium and organic materials, it’s one of the most expensive mattresses in Saatva’s line and the most expensive mattress in our Best Mattresses rating this year.
The Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress has six distinct layers and is flippable. There are two GOTS-certified organic New Zealand wool layers on the top and bottom of the mattress. These layers help wick away moisture and regulate body temperature. They also act as natural fire barriers. Underneath the top wool layer and above the bottom wool layer lie one layer of zoned vented latex. These are the main pressure-relieving layers and also contribute to better airflow. The two core latex layers provide support and durability. The mattress is covered in organic cotton that’s also zoned to provide more support in the lumbar region.

Overall, our tester who classifies as of average weight (201 pounds) thought the Saatva Zenhaven felt firm, supportive, and fairly bouncy. However, your body weight and sleeping style will heavily influence how the mattress feels to you. Here, we’ll break down how we’d expect the mattress to feel for different body types based on its materials and construction.
Lightweight Sleepers (less than 130 pounds)
Lightweight sleepers generally perceive mattresses as firmer since their body weight doesn’t compress the mattress as much as heavier sleepers do. A lightweight side sleeper would likely find the firm side of the Zenhaven too firm but would be comfortable on the medium-soft side. Saatva doesn’t make any recommendations about whether this mattress is intended for lightweight sleepers or not, but there is some flexibility since it’s flippable.
Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)
Our average-weight tester had mostly positive things to say about this mattress. When back sleeping, he felt like every part of his spine was actively and properly supported, and he felt relief in his hips and shoulders when sleeping on his stomach. He did note some strain in his shoulder and arm when side sleeping on the firm side but said it was only slight. Dedicated side sleepers may do better on the medium-soft side of this mattress, but the firm side is a better fit for back and stomach sleepers who need less “give.” He also felt nice and cool, so this mattress will likely work well for hot sleepers, too.
Heavyweight Sleepers (more than 230 pounds)
Heavyweight sleepers generally need more support in the form of coil layers and reinforced perimeters to prevent unwanted sagging and premature mattress breakdown. The Zenhaven is a latex mattress, which doesn’t offer as much support as hybrid or innerspring models like the Saatva Classic. While Saatva says the Zenhaven doesn’t have an official weight limit, most standard mattresses can support up to 250 pounds per side unless specifically designed for more than that. The medium-soft side probably wouldn’t be supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers, but the firm side could offer enough support for those who like the responsiveness of latex and don’t want coils.
USN&WR
The Layla Memory Foam
The Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress and the Layla Memory Foam mattress are both flippable models with a softer and firmer side. But aside from that, these mattresses are worlds apart. The Saatva Zenhaven is made from GOLS- and GOTS-certified organic wool and latex respectively, while the Layla has four layers of traditional foams.
The Layla is marketed as a cooling mattress because of its gel-infused memory foam, but we thought the firmer side trapped heat with little to no cooling sensation. Conversely, the Zenhaven’s firmer side stayed cool during testing.
If you like the sink-in feeling of memory foam and don’t sleep hot, opting for the Layla Memory Foam mattress could save you some money – it’s about three times less expensive than the Zenhaven. But if you want a cooling, responsive mattress and don’t mind paying more, the Zenhaven is more luxurious. It’s worth noting that the Zenhaven is also covered by a more generous sleep trial: 365 nights compared to Layla’s 120 nights.

USN&WR
Cocoon is a brand of direct-to-consumer bedding products from mattress giant Sealy.
The Cocoon by Sealy Chill Memory Foam Mattress is heavily marketed as a cooling mattress, but we don’t think it quite lives up to the hype. While we noticed an initial cooling sensation, the mattress warmed up the longer we were on it.
This makes sense given that the mattress is all memory foam – it has three layers of foam wrapped in a cooling cover. On the other hand, the Zenhaven didn’t trap heat, likely thanks to its natural latex and wool construction.
Unlike the Saatva Zenhaven, which has different firmness levels on each side, the Chill Memory Foam mattress isn’t flippable. Sealy rates it a 6 out of 10, or a medium. We think it feels more like a 4, so if you like a soft mattress with a sink-in, body-conforming feel, it may work for you.
The Chill is also the more budget-friendly of the two, retailing for just more than $1,000 for a queen compared to more than $3,000 for the Zenhaven.

Where can I buy a Saatva mattress?
You can buy a Saatva mattress online from the company website. If you’d like to see or try the mattress in person first, Saatva also operates viewing rooms in the following cities:
If you live in the contiguous U.S., Saatva includes free in-home delivery with your mattress purchase. Though this type of service is common among mattress companies, it typically costs an extra fee. Residents of Alaska and Hawaii are not eligible for this service or direct delivery, though Saatva can still ship to them via freight forwarder.
Saatva Warranty: Lifetime Warranty
A mattress’s warranty length can be an indicator of its durability over time. Saatva’s lifetime warranty covers your mattress for as long as you own it, though the terms change after the first couple of years. During the first two years of the warranty, Saatva will completely replace a defective mattress at no cost to you. From the third year of the warranty onward, Saatva will repair a defective mattress, but you will be charged a $149 processing fee.
If you would rather not pay this fee, you could take advantage of Saatva’s Fairness Replacement Option. If you find your mattress to be defective, you can keep the original mattress and purchase a new one for a fraction of what you originally paid. This discount is prorated based on how long you’ve owned the mattress – the older it is, the more you will pay for the replacement.
Saatva Trial Period: 365 nights
Saatva gives you 365 nights to test your new mattress at home to decide if you want to keep it. This is one of the most generous trial periods of any mattress company in our rating, comparable only to Nectar and DreamCloud. The more common trial period is between 100 and 120 nights.
If you decide you want to send your mattress back at any point, you’ll have to call Saatva’s customer service to initiate the return process. You can exchange the bed for another model or return it for a refund. Either option comes with a $99 processing fee.
Founded in 2010, Saatva manufactures luxury mattresses. Its product lineup uses a range of materials and caters to multiple sleeping styles. Its flagship model, the Saatva Classic, is an innerspring mattress.
Saatva makes two standard models without coils: the memory foam Loom & Leaf and the all-latex Zenhaven. It also offers hybrid beds like the Latex Hybrid, Memory Foam Hybrid, Saatva Rx, and Saatva HD. The HD is designed for heavier sleepers. Saatva sells a youth bed, a crib mattress, a bunk and trundle mattress, a dog bed, and an adjustable air bed – the Solaire – as well.
Saatva is not a mattress-in-a-box brand, so its mattresses are not rolled and compressed for shipping and you don’t need to wait for your mattress to expand. That said, the materials in the mattress may require a few days to soften up.
Saatva sets up the mattress in your home free of charge as part of its white glove service. The day before your scheduled delivery date, the delivery team will contact you to provide a four-hour window for its arrival.
To prepare your home for mattress setup, Saatva suggests clearing any obstructions from the path to your bedroom and removing furniture or decorations that could potentially get knocked over. If you opt to have your old mattress and foundation removed, you should remove the bedding and ensure the mattress and foundation are not stained or damaged.
We tried the Saatva Classic and the Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress in our 360 Lab and didn’t notice a chemical smell from either of them. The Saatva Classic is made from CertiPUR-US certified foams, so it doesn’t contain any volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are typically responsible for the off-gassing smells you get with some mattresses. The Zenhaven is made with organic latex, which is also free of off-gassing chemicals. Saatva says if you do get a slight smell, it should dissipate within 24 hours.
Saatva mattresses don’t need a box spring, but you can use one if you want to. If you do decide to use a box spring, Saatva recommends using one that was purchased within the last seven years and is in good condition with lots of support in its center. If you don’t use a box spring, you should use a sturdy platform base with a slatted support system.
If you’re interested in purchasing the Saatva Classic or any of the other mattresses in the Saatva lineup, visit the Saatva coupon page to learn about sales and find discount codes to help you save on your next purchase.
