As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, December is shaping up to be a month filled with movies and TV shows. While movie theaters continue to showcase new releases, most blockbusters and Oscar hopefuls are moving to streaming platforms or waiting until 2021.

Thankfully, December looks like another great month for streaming, as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime will bring plenty of new releases, including plenty of holiday movies and specials.

Here’s the full list of new movies and TV shows arriving on the three platforms in December, as well as our must-watch picks from each company.

Top Pick: “Sunshine”

In the future, the sun’s power is slowly fading, spelling an end to life in our solar system. Humanity’s last hope is to send a group of scientists — played by the likes of Cillian Murphy (“Batman Begins”), Rose Byrne (“Bridesmaids”), and Sudbury native Chris Evans (“Captain America”) — to drop a nuclear bomb into the sun’s core in an attempt to restart it. It may sound like an absurd sequel to “Armageddon,” but Danny Boyle’s heady sci-fi/thriller is much more than that, owing more of its cerebral DNA to the likes of “Solaris” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Evans is understated but effective in this pre-Marvel performance, and with daylight hours dwindling, Boyle’s absolutely gorgeous solar visuals will cast a warming glow in your living room.

TV Shows/Specials

Top TV pick: “Letterkenny” (Season 9)

As “Schitt’s Creek” proved with its record-setting Emmys sweep earlier this year, some of the best current TV comedies are Canadian imports. “Letterkenny” follows the trials and tribulations of a rural Canadian town of the same name. The series leads — farm stand operators Wayne and Katy — are amusing in their own right, but it’s the town’s broad tapestry of oddball cliques — from the out-of-town hockey players to the rebellious “skids” — that make the show binge-worthy.

Movies

Top pick: “MANK”

Over the last decade, having David Fincher direct your movie is one of the best bets at landing an Oscar nomination, as he’s proven with the likes of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Social Network,” and “Gone Girl.” That’s what Netflix is gunning for with “MANK,” which stars Gary Oldman (“Batman Begins”) as “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he struggles with Orson Welles to create what’s generally regarded as the greatest American film of all time. A must-see for film history buffs and an enjoyable watch for most others, “MANK” debuts Dec. 4.

TV Shows/Specials

Top pick: “Big Mouth” (Season 4)

“Big Mouth” is a ribald animated comedy about puberty that features cartoon genitalia, masturbation jokes, and literal “hormone monsters.” It’s also extremely funny, and offers more honesty and compassion about sex education than you’ll find in most public schools. Season 4 brings the tween cast to summer camp, where anxiety rears its ugly head. Featuring a deep cast that includes Nick Kroll (“Sausage Party”), John Mulaney (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), and Nahant native Jason Mantzoukas (“The League”), season four will also feature the voice of Milton native Jenny Slate (“The Secret Life of Pets”) playing Missy, a role she departed earlier this year because Missy is a biracial character while Slate is white. Season 4 arrives on Netflix Dec. 4.

TV Shows/Specials

Top pick: “City on a Hill” (Season 1)

Showtime’s crime drama about 1990s Boston may be a work of fiction, but there are a number of real-life people and events that drive the show’s narrative, which centers around an FBI investigator (Kevin Bacon, “Footloose”) and an assistant district attorney (Aldis Hodge, “Hidden Figures”) teaming up to take down a gang of armored car robbers. While the show’s second season doesn’t have a release date yet, producer Ben Affleck and creator/producer Chuck MacLean hope to do for Boston what “The Wire” did for Baltimore over the course of at least five seasons, so it’s worth catching up now while you can.
