Who We Are

When you enroll through our subsidized university program the Department of National Defence (DND) will pay for your tuition, uniforms, books, academic equipment and other essential fees. You will also receive a salary and benefits while you attend university. (Mandatory room and board and pension fees are deducted.) Your salary will include full medical and dental care as well as vacation with full pay. In exchange, you must complete approximately 5 years of service after graduation depending on the career.

If you qualify for subsidized university, you will enter the Canadian Military College system under the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP). As part of this plan, you will complete your undergraduate degree at either the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, The Royal Military College Saint-Jean in Saint-Jean, Quebec, or any accredited program at a Canadian university. Students begin the program as Officer Cadets/Naval Cadets and receive a first-class education that balances academics, leadership, bilingualism and athletics. In addition to a university education Officer Cadets/Naval Cadets also receive military training, physical fitness training, on the job training and second language training.

Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP)

If you qualify for paid university, you will enter the Canadian Military College system under ROTP. Students begin the program as Officer Cadets and receive a first-class education that balances academics, leadership, bilingualism and athletics. In most cases, our students complete their studies at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC).

If you have an average of at least 70 percent in the subjects required for your program, you will begin your studies as a senior applicant. The first year of your program will take place at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), or Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean). If you are attending RMC Saint-Jean, you will complete the last three years of your degree at RMC.

Indigenous Leadership Opportunities Year (ILOY)

ILOY is a one-year educational and leadership experience through the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston, Ontario. The ILOY program includes:
• Sports
• Field trips
• Leadership development
• Military training
• Cultural support activities
• Individual learning plans
Through these learning plans, you will take part in individual and small group tutorials for pre-university (non-credit) and first-year university courses.
As part of the program, you will enroll in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for one year as an Officer Cadet and receive free tuition and books. You may request to leave the program at any time. At the end of the year, you may apply to continue at RMC in a degree program through the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP).

Basic Admissions Requirements

RMC bases admission on Grade 11 marks and applicants must verify that they are taking the courses in Grade 12 required for their intended degree. To pursue a degree in Physics students must take Physics in high school and to pursue a degree in Chemistry students must take Chemistry in high school.


IB and AP Credits

IB and AP programs are recognized as beneficial for the programs of study offered at RMC, however no transfer credits are granted.

English Proficiency Requirements

RMC is a bilingual university. Applicants must be able to communicate in either English or French to be considered for admission.


Application Deadline

The application deadline is January 31 however students are encouraged to apply in September or October of their final year of high school to allow time for processing of their application. Students apply directly on the Forces website.

Application Fee

There is no application fee to apply to the ROTP subsidized university education program.
