Roshan, sometimes also referred to as Roshan the Immortal, is a powerful neutral creep boss who easily outmatches almost every hero without the right equipment or level. As time passes, Roshan continues to grow stronger throughout the match, and respawns endlessly when defeated.

Defeating Roshan rewards the team with strong single-use items, making him a very contested unit on the map and a possible key factor to the course of a match. Due to his strength, team coordination is usually required a lot to fight him, making it also quite risky, since the enemy team could intervene at any time..

  • Roshan casts Roar of Retribution if he has been aggroed by the same team that last killed him and is below 80% health.
  • On cast, Roar of Retribution creates a 900 range aura around Roshan that applies the debuff. The aura lasts 8 seconds and lingers for 0.5 seconds.
  • Roar of Retribution first creates the aura, then applies the damage.

  • The first armor bonus is granted as the first creep wave spawns, and then every minute onward.
    • The armor is provided by a 1 radius aura. This means it can also affect other neutral creeps close enough to Roshan.
  • The aura's buff lingers for 0.5 seconds.
  • All other bonuses are granted every minute after the first creep wave spawns.
    • These bonuses persist through his death and keep on increasing while he is dead.
  • Illusions deal 80% less damage to Roshan with their attacks.
    • However, abilities from illusion deal full damage if they can be cast.

  • Activates whenever the time of day changes.
    • While active, Roshan gains movement speed and starts moving toward the other pit.
    • Roshan uses the Twin Gates to teleport across the map towards the other pit.
  • While moving, any enemy coming within 100 range of Roshan gets damaged and knocked back.
    • Does not affect enemies that already have the knockback modifier on them.
    • This means if dispelled, they can get immediately affected again.
    • This also means that other abilities that use this modifier (e.g. Greater Bash) prevent the unit from being affected as well.
  • Enemies are fully disabled during the knockback.
  • On The Move first applies the debuff, then the damage.
  • Debuffed units are knocked back at a speed of 250.
    • Also knocks affected enemies 50 units upwards, resulting in a small arc. This has only visual purposes.
    • Destroys trees within 100 radius enemies come in contact with during the knockback.

Behavior[edit]

Roshan behaves similarly to other neutral creeps, idling inside his pit when not disturbed and only attacking when aggroed.

Unlike other units, Roshan prioritizes attacking ward-type units if there are no other units within his attack range currently, even if he is being attacked by other units from farther away.

Roshan moves between his 2 Roshan Pits depending on the daytime. When day turns to night, he moves to the pit on Dire's side of the map, and when night turns to day, he moves back to the pit on Radiant's side. Roshan uses the Twin Gates on this journey, teleporting across the map.

Roshan Pit[edit]

Roshan's location on the minimap
File:Roshan Pit Radiant.png

File:Roshan Pit Dire.png

Roshan can be found inside one of his pits, which are located on the far north-west and south-east corners of the map. The pits are wedged right into the two corners of the map and lie very close to the Twin Gates. The entries of the pits faces towards the center of the map. The pits' shell is U-shaped and has a length of about 1250 range and width of about 1050 range. The passable area inside the pit has a length and width of about 750 to 550 range.

Limitations inside the pits[edit]

Roshan can only be attacked from within the pits' areas, with the skull poles and the torches at the entry marking where it begins. Abilities can target Roshan from anywhere and are not restricted like attacks. Roshan himself can also attack from anywhere, he does not have to be within his pit to attack. Roshan always stays at the end of the pit when not attacking and only attacks if enemy units come within 150 range of him, or damage him from within 1800 range.

Vision is very restricted around the pits by a vision blocker, which prevents units with ground vision from seeing past the boundary of the pits in either direction (in or out), even if they are on high ground. The vision blocker affects units and abilities alike, so if an ability grants ground vision, its center has to be within the pits to see into it. However, the vision blocker does not affect units or abilities with flying vision: they can see through it normally in both directions.

Observer Wards and Sentry Wards cannot be placed inside the pits. However, the True Sight of Sentry Wards still affects inside the pit if the ward is placed just outside the pit. All other ward-type units can be placed inside it as usual. Iron Branches cannot be planted within the pits either, so it is not possible to block the entries off, or to create additional fog inside the pits. Mischief has a unique behavior when used inside a pit, transforming the caster into Aegis, Cheese, or into Refresher Shard, based on how often Roshan respawned. All other spells and items function normally inside the pit.

Couriers have no vision when they are inside Roshan's pit.

Roshan's death[edit]

When Roshan is slain, he lets loose a deafening ▶️ roar, audible on the entire map, The scream is accompanied by a special piece of music and an announcement from the announcer is played for all 10 players. Along with that, a screen message appears, announcing its death and which team killed it.

Respawning[edit]

When Roshan is slain, he respawns after a random time between 8 – 11 minutes. Roshan respawns in Radiant's pit if it is daytime, and in Dire's pit if it is nighttime. Unlike with other neutral creeps, the respawn cannot be prevented by any means. The players do not get any indicator for when exactly he respawns, but spectators and casters can see a clock at Roshan's spawn point, showing the exact time left for the respawn (not until 5 minutes after Roshan was slain).

Kill Rewards[edit]

Each player of the killing team is rewarded with 135 Gold unreliable gold, and the hero who deals the killing blow gets an extra random bonus of 200‒290 Gold, effectively gaining 335‒425 Gold. The gold is granted to all players of the team, regardless of where they are. The experience follows the default experience bounty rule, getting split between all allies within 1500 range.

Besides a big gold and experience reward, Roshan also drops several powerful consumable items on his death. These items can be picked up by any hero and are not limited to the player or team that has slain Roshan. When selecting Roshan, the items are visible in his inventory.

Aegis of the Immortal: Drops on each of Roshan's deaths. Roshan reclaims this item once he respawns, no matter where it is. Cannot be dropped once picked up. Cannot be sold. Picking up or denying this item displays an announcement for both teams. Has the Reincarnation ability.
Cheese: Drops on Roshan's second death and onwards if slain while in the Dire pit. Fully sharable with allies. Can be sold for 500 Gold by the first player that picked it up. Has the Fondue ability.
Roshan's Banner: Drops on Roshan's second death and onwards if slain while in the Radiant pit. Fully sharable with allies. Cannot be sold. Has the Place Banner ability. Placing the banner displays an announcement for both teams.
Aghanim's Blessing - Roshan: Drops on Roshan's third death if slain while in the Dire Pit. Fully sharable with allies. Cannot be sold. Functions like the store-bought Aghanim's Blessing, however, it must be manually consumed.
Refresher Shard: Drops on Roshan's third death if slain while in the Radiant Pit. Fully sharable with allies. Can be sold for 500 Gold by the first player that picked it up. Has the Reset Cooldowns ability.

Spell interactions[edit]

Roshan is an ancient creep, so that all ancient creep interactions apply, unless stated otherwise here. He also has 100% resistance to forced movement so that spells cannot move him at all. Roshan has no mana either, making him automatically immune to anything that works with mana, or null the effects of spells which are based on mana (e.g. Mana Void only stuns him). Furthermore, several spells have a unique behavior towards Roshan, treating him specifically different than any other unit.

Not affecting Roshan[edit]

These spells cannot affect Roshan specifically, regardless of the ancient unit tag he has (meaning, even if he was not an ancient creep, these spells still would not affect him).

Unique interactions[edit]

These interactions are unique to Roshan

  • Although affecting him, Roshan's health gets periodically set to his default health+ the time-based bonus he gains, overriding the effects of this aura.
  • Does not heal upon killing Roshan.
  • Uses the hero duration on Roshan, rather than the creep duration.
  • The bounces cannot slow or damage Roshan. Only the initial cast damage and slow.
  • Roshan turns into a giant version of the critter he gets hexed into.
  • Roshan turns into a giant version of the critter he gets hexed into.
  • Roshan turns into a giant version of the critter he gets hexed into.
  • Lasts shorter on Roshan than on any other unit.
  • Uses the hero stun duration, but the creep damage against Roshan.

Forced movement interactions[edit]

Forced movement and teleport spells react differently to forced movement immunity. All not-listed forced movement or teleport spells cannot affect Roshan due to his status.

The following spells completely apply all their effects except for the movement itself. This includes the disable coming along with the movement.

1 The damage is applied instantly, since it is queued to happen after the movement, which gets fully skipped.

2 Roshan gets stunned, instead of getting lifted. The AoE stun is applied instantly, since it is queued to happen after the lift, which gets fully skipped.

The following spells apply all effects as well, except for the disable along with the movement, so that they do not even interrupt Roshan.

  • The lasso itself is immediately removed, so that Roshan is not even interrupted. Batrider is disabled for the full duration. When upgraded, although the damage modifier is applied for the full duration, it deals no damage when the lasso modifier is missing.
  • As a secondary target, Roshan takes damage and is slowed. His facing direction is changed as well, but he is not interrupted at all.
  • Since the damage is queued to happen after the lift, it is applied immediately.
  • Since the damage is queued to happen after the lift, it is applied immediately.
  • The bash is immediately removed, so that Roshan is not even interrupted. The damage is applied and Spirit Breaker receives the self-buff.
  • Since Cyclone only lifts and disables, it effectively does nothing against Roshan.

Roshan damage interactions[edit]

These spells react on damage dealt by Roshan, getting either disabled or interrupted.

* Soul Assumption counts damage dealt by Roshan to heroes.

Trivia[edit]

  • Roshan was named after Guinsoo's bowling ball.[1]
  • According to the Are We Heroes Yet? comic, Roshan killed a Shopkeeper, thus claiming the Aegis of the Immortal, and being cursed to have his treasure stolen from him again and again.
  • Roshan in Farsi means "Light", "On" or "Bright", and is also a common Persian and Indian name.
  • League of Legends' Baron Nashor is conceptually based on Roshan. The word "Nashor" is an anagram of "Roshan."
