Will there be an eighth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars? By the end of the prequel trilogy in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, the Jedi Order was scattered across the galaxy in a legendary conflict called the Clone Wars, as they battled against the forces of Count Dooku and his Separatists. The end of the war saw the New Republic collapse, transformed into the Empire, as the Clone Army turned upon the Jedi.

The main Star Wars movies only show the beginning and end of the Clone Wars, and George Lucas, along with The Clone Wars' director Dave Filoni, ultimately chose to revisit the conflict in an animated series. Audiences were initially skeptical, but it soon proved to be a hit. Sadly, The Clone Wars was wound down in early 2013, shortly after Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm.

And then, at Star Wars Celebration 2019, Lucasfilm delighted fans by revealing The Clone Wars would return for what they insisted was a final season. But could there be yet another revival?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 Goes Beyond The War's End

Ahsoka and Order 66 in Clone Wars

The first seasons of The Clone Wars eschewed the traditional chronological order, but the final season is set entirely at the tail-end of the conflict. The last few episodes are concurrent with Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, revealing how Padawan Ahsoka Tano survived Order 66, and the final episode's plot extends beyond what is shown in the movies. Officially, then, the Clone Wars are over.

There Are Unfinished Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episodes

Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 is shorter than Lucasfilm's original plans, which means the story has been compressed, and a lot has been dropped completely. Lucasfilm could, therefore, choose to step back in time with The Clone Wars season 8, telling tales that were unfinished but nevertheless are considered actual canon. This could include the likes of "Crystal Crisis," which foreshadowed the creation of the Death Star; an animated version of the Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comics; and several major cut arcs featuring bounty hunters. Lucasfilm doesn't seem particularly likely to ever revisit these, of course, but there's clearly demand.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Story Continues In Rebels

Ahsoka Tano in Rebels

Star Wars Rebels is the spiritual successor of The Clone Wars, and it continues its story. Star Wars Rebels features prominent roles for a number of key heroes and villains, including the likes of Ahsoka and Darth Maul; one of the most striking scenes sees Ahsoka confront Darth Vader, realizing at last that he is her former mentor. Even the arcs of secondary characters such as Rex and the Mandalorians are continued into Star Wars Rebels.

There May Be Another Star Wars Animated Series With Ahsoka

Ahsoka arrives on Mandalore in Star Wars The Clone Wars season seven's eleventh episode.

That does not, however, mean Ahsoka's story is finished. She is known to have survived the Galactic Civil War, and after Return of the Jedi she undertook a quest to the Unknown Regions with one of her closest friends. There have been persistent rumors Lucasfilm is considering another animated series detailing this quest, and indeed that would be appropriate given the significance of the Unknown Regions in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Rosario Dawson has been cast as a live-action Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian season 2. This series is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and Ahsoka's presence presumably means her quest has come to an end by that point. It will be fascinating to see what role she plays in The Mandalorian; she will remember the Siege of Mandalore well and could prove either a potent ally or a dangerous enemy for the titular bounty hunter.
