      Critics Consensus

While it's far better than it could have been, José Padilha's RoboCop remake fails to offer a significant improvement over the original.

Scott Tobias The Dissolve [A]fter an opening sequence as promising as the one here, it needs at least an attempted follow-through, not the jumble of confused ideas and time-wasting effects that take up the bulk of the film. Rated: 2.0/5 Feb 20, 2014 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic Surveying the peculiar array of 1980s retreads clustered into release this week, I'm reminded of Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II, traveling forward in time 30 years to discover that everything is still the same, only worse. Feb 14, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The Brazilian director José Padilha may be working for a Hollywood studio but he doesn't temper his critique of American imperialism, big business and political corruption. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2014 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz What could have been a depressing assault on the childhood of those who grew up in the 1980s was instead one of the best action-sci-fi movies since Minority Report over a decade earlier. Rated: 5/5 Apr 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It isn’t as provocative as it wants to be. It isn’t as clever as it tries to be. It isn’t as witty as it needs to be. But it is more fun than I ever expected it to be. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A smarter-than-average actioner that may not be as fun or edgy as Verhoeven’s, but manages to do what remakes so often strive and fail to accomplish: It achieves a new take on an old classic and does so with enough innovation to warrant its existence. Fabio Ramos Perfect filme excelente!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Adi 1 This remake of the 1987 original is definitely not better but still tells its story in a different but good way. The characters are also handled well. The film basically loses because of weak action choreography and an unnecessarily long runtime. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Keith N I just want to say...why did they have to reboot this? just the word why. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Michael one of the worst movies made. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Killian M The RoboCop remake shows some much promise in its ideas, worldbuilding, and characteristics. Unfortunately, the way it is executed feels generic and terms what could have possibly been a science fiction gem into just another OK movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Forged S Is this a good movie? Sure. But is it a Robocop movie? Not even close. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Robocop is NOT a superhero. I can hear the film execs now, "Let's update Robocop for modern audiences and with a sleek new suit. The kids will love it!" Robocop is satirical commentary on greed, corruption and police brutality. People should not WANT to put on the suit. Yet, here the studios are, unironically doing the exact thing the villains are doing in the movie. I would love to appreciate the movie for how well it retells the story of Alex Murphy. I would love to see director Jose Padilha's original vision (an inspired choice). Unfortunately, this movie shouldn't exist in its current form, a form that was fully and notoriously crafted by the studio execs. Hopefully, they try again later and get it right. Thankfully there seems to be a faithful video game that just released. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
