Season 3 of "Narcos" will hit Netflix on Friday, Sept. 1, and with the end of notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, a new group of criminals will rise - the Cali Cartel.

Escobar, the leader of the Medellín Cartel, died on Dec. 2, 1993, and the second season of the show begins that year, though, by the end of it, Escobar is dead.

With the death of Escobar, the Cali Cartel, lead by Gilberto Rodriguez, his brother Miguel and their co-leader Chepe Santacruz Londono, rose up to supply the American demand for cocaine from South America.

While most of the characters are based on real-life people, some of them from seasons one and two were created specifically for the show.

Horatio Carrillo, the leader of the Colombian forces tasked to bring down Escobar, didn't actually exist. He's believed to be inspired by Colonel Hugo Martinez, who was tasked with hunting down Escobar. Even Escobar's wife is somewhat fictionalized. In real life, Escobar was married to Maria Victoria Henao Vallejos. On the show, producers renamed Escobar's wife to Tata.
