'Sir, your fly is down': Robert Downey Jr. chats with Jay Leno about doing Gangnam Style in South Korea... and his wardrobe malfunction on the Iron Man 3 red carpet

It's become one of the most talked about wardrobe malfunctions of the year.

And it would have gone unnoticed by Robert Downey Jr. if he hadn't had a try at doing the Gangnam Style dance.

Earlier this month, the 48-year-old actor was caught walking the red carpet at the South Korean premiere of Iron Man 3 with his fly down, and images of the whole incident have gone viral.

The action film star opened up about the traumatic event in a sit down with Jay Leno on Friday.

From head to toe the Sherlock Holmes actor dressed the part of an effortlessly cool rock star in a black leather jacket and a retro Pink Floyd tee.

And he took care of every last detail as he proudly stepped on the stage wearing a pair of ostentatious leopard print trainers.

The talk show host was quick to bring up the now famous incident -- which also happened to be on the actor's 48th birthday.

Jay pulled up an image of Robert's nearly exposed lower half for the audience, drawing shrill screams and laughter as the actor covered his face in shame.

'Here's what happened,' he began to explain, detailing that he had spent all evening at the premiere in what he called 'grind monkey grind' mode.

'They ask you to do stuff, so I got [on stage] and they go "you know Gangnam style" and I was like, "not really."'

To please the audience he put on a dance and mimicked the entire event on Jay's couch.

'I didn't know what I was doing,' he said.

But after having done a bang up job, he got 'super excited,' only to be approached by a stranger on stage.

'I said, "How can I help you?" and they said, "Your fly is down."

'I said, "Thank you very much,"' he reminisced.

Much to Robert's protest, Jay then cued up a clip of the actor on-stage at the South Korean premiere showing off his impressive dance moves -- and the whole time having his zipper undone.

The actor also opened up about stopping production after he got injured on the set of the latest film in the Iron Man series.

'We were doing wire jumps and stunts and stuff, and I was like, "This is easy,"' he said, shirking off requests by the crew to allow a proper stuntman to handle the hard stuff.

Robert asked the director to keep the camera rolling, and after only a few minutes, he wrecked the stunt -- and broke his ankle.

'About 2 minutes later I said, "That's lunch." I couldn't speak.

'I had nothing to say, which really surprised people. No "ow," no screams,' he said, making a tightened facial expression mired in pain.

Fortunately for Robert, the moment will not go down in history as the scene was left behind on the cutting room floor.

'It didn't really work,' he joked.

His appearance on the late night talk show comes as he makes the rounds promoting his latest film, Iron Man 3, which will open in theatres on May 3.
